I completed nearly two and half years at Infosys. I am moving on to next role in a new organization soon.
Time between jobs gave me time for some introspection and reflection on my stint at Infosys. I want to pen this down in the hope that this will benefit the wider community that i am connected with on Linkedin.
I was responsible segments like Capital Markets, Banking, Retirements services for Financial Services Domain Consulting Group while at Infosys. This was a P&L ownership role and it came with its set of challenges and endowments.
It is indeed difficult to pick things that made me tick in this role. It is really a complex concoction of multiple factors. However, i am going to pick my top 3
- Quick understanding of KRAs : When you take on any role, its important that you understand the Key Result Areas quickly. IMHO, i did good to understand key stakeholders and what they expect from me - things they mentioned explicitly and things i had to decipher based on their reactions.
- Challenge, mentor and monitor my team: Given wide scope of responsibility, i had to rely on my next level to achieve the KRAs. It was down to challenging the team to think different and act on it! They knew that "I had their back!". Most of them were seasoned professionals. so it was important to "mentor" them without being too prescriptive. As a national Cricket coach once said, "Boys who reach this level, already know how to play a drive. You need to guide them on when to play it vs. when to curb your instincts for team's cause!". While, i let the leads drive the show on many occasions, i chose to be on the forefront when heavy-lifting was necessary. This also required regular monitoring of critical activities - Be it a team ramp up for a large program or pursuit of a large deal.
- Invest in design: I have noticed a tendency to rush from "understanding the problem" stage to "execution" stage in many people. I always like to spend time on "designing" the solution. its very difficult to spend time designing, while dealing with a burning issue...people don't see the output of design for a while, and they tend to think, this guy is "just thinking and not acting". However, a good design is a major step towards success. i "invested" time in designing solutions - be it new product alliance, strategy for large scale transformation or managing attrition. This helped create a sustainable and effective solution that delivered results.
I think i was fairly successful at what i did. but a significant part of this success is due to wonderful team of professionals i inherited at work and a wonderful system of mentoring i received not only from my immediate manager but also other senior stakeholders in the group.
As i look back at my stint, i am proud of what i achieved, but mindful and extremely thankful of contributions from others that made it possible!!
Now, thats history and i look forward to the new challenge...More about it..soon.....!
