Thank you to everyday heroes
During these times of uncertainty, it is difficult to know what to say. Despite the situation, I wish to take a moment and celebrate the efforts of frontline workers. Over the last couple of weeks, people, leaders and institutions have been paying tribute to them. Many of us will have seen stories, videos and images shared through social media.
Some heart-warming instances include residents in lockdown coming together every night at 8pm and giving a round of applause from their balconies to thank the ongoing efforts of frontline workers (1). In Canada recently, as the Ontario government announced the expansion of Telehealth resources, over 3,950 nurses volunteered in helping with the program and other remote diagnosis. Doris Grinspun, CEO of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO), proudly responded: “our nursing tribe, this is the way we are”(2). Daily, an increasing number of people are coming out of retirement to help. An example of this was recorded in the Maritimes, where recently retired physicians and nurses stepped in on an emergency basis (3). Similarly, medical students worldwide are bravely helping out. These selfless acts are ones to praise. During this time, I also wish to acknowledge and thank my own daughter, a nurse at SickKids here in Toronto. You inspire me every day.
And to all frontline workers, I say - you are here for us and we are here for you. Thank you.
