Thank you Dan Wieden. Another great creative mind that will be missed.

"Thank you, Dan, for throwing the doors wide open for people to live up to their full potential," the Wieden and Kennedy Twitter account said in a post announcing the death of Dan Weiden on Saturday. "We will miss you so much."

Dan Weiden died at the age of 77, and the world has lost an advertising legend synonymous with the work he created for many iconic brands. Nike's "Just Do It" was dreamt up by Wieden and first appeared in a TV commercial for the brand in 1988. In addition to his work with Nike, Weiden is well known for his contributions to other giants such as Mcdonalds, Bud Light, and Old Spice.

His obituary stated, "a writer at heart, Wieden's intention was never to create a huge advertising agency but rather to provide a place where people could do the best work of their lives." Indeed his vision for the advertising agency he co-founded, Weiden and Kentucky, was well known within the industry for hiring people without traditional advertising backgrounds. Weiden had a unique perspective for the staffing teams he built up and the brands he created for. His company offered an offbeat work environment and an alternative yet prevalent ethos, which proved inspiring to other creative agencies and attractive to the brands that wanted to collaborate with them. Dan Wieden, who famously said he would never sell the agency, transferred ownership into a trust before he died to ensure Wieden and Kennedy would remain independent indefinitely.

I love the Nike "Just Do It" concept; it's one of those simple yet effective slogans that has stood the test of time and still resonates with audiences today as it did thirty years ago. Wieden cemented Nike's identity within the marketplace with his genius idea, and, within his 77-year lifetime, he left behind many other creative ideas that have evolved into brand legacies.

Another great creative mind that will be missed.
