Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. The War to end all WARS. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11th became a national holiday beginning in 1938.
Despite who sits in the White House, men and women of the armed services proudly and humbly protected our nations freedoms around the globe. This Veteran’s Day be sure to thank a veteran for missing their children's birthday, wedding anniversaries, the birth of their children and many other holidays due to service. Whether it be November 11th, or one of the other 364 days out of the year join me in saying “Thank You”.
Mainly Due to their skillset and attributes Veterans successfully continue to serve our communities going above and beyond. Service goes beyond the uniform. According to the most recent statistics there are an estimated 17.4 million veterans in the United States. Still Veterans only make up less than 6% of the United States population.
US VA Health care facilities are comprised of over 1,000 outpatient sites and nearly 200 VA Medical Centers. As a veteran I applaud the tireless efforts of VA doctors, administrators and others working to serve our veterans. More than nine million veterans are served each year by the Department of Veterans Affairs. To locate or learn more about VA Benefits check out: https://www.va.gov
Unfortunately not all Veterans are able to healthfully transition from the military. More than 6,000 veterans died by suicide annually, according to the VA's 2019 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report. If you or know a Veteran who might struggle with PTSD be sure to seek professional help for these invisible wounds ASAP. Those who serve or those who know a veteran, let them know we care. HAPPY VETERANS DAY to all who proudly served.
