2023 is a year we will never forget!

It has been a year of some incredible highs, a few too many lows, and the typical rollercoaster of building a start-up.

Not that we didn’t know it already, but this year has reinforced our ability to win as a team, lose as a team, and continue to march forward with grit and determination. None of the below highlights would be possible without our wonderful people, past and present. ??

  • Achieved our B-Corp certification after a 2-year journey (more details coming in January).
  • Partnered in-house with 31 customers, connecting c.300 high-impact people with purpose-driven companies.
  • Welcomed 4x team members back from maternity leave.
  • £7k towards our company impact fund (Mind, UN Women UK, and a carbon offset project in Kenya).
  • Re-launched our mission to be the most impactful talent partner on the planet by elevating TA to new levels. Focusing on customer impact: delivering quality hiring & ROI, candidate impact through our talent experiences, and global impact through our commitment to B-Corp.

This year, Canda has made remarkable strides in talent acquisition, evidenced by our key metrics:


  • Cost Efficiency: Our customers enjoy significant savings with an average cost per hire under £4k across Tech, GTM, and Commercial job families. This efficiency equates to just 7.8% of the starting salaries, reflecting our commitment to economical and effective recruitment solutions. This contrasts with traditional recruitment agency costs, where our customers have saved an average of £47k per month.
  • Hiring Impact: A total of 245 hires were made in 2023, showcasing our capability in efficient talent placement.
  • Time-to-Hire: Our average time-to-hire was 51 days, reflecting our commitment to both speed and quality in recruitment.
  • Salary Insights: We placed roles with a total salary value of £13.71m, with an average salary of £55k per hire.

Reflecting on a year of growth and challenges

We've seen loads of great, wholesome posts re. seeing out 2023, but for us, it’s been a huge learning curve, at times very difficult, and quite honestly, we can’t wait to see the back of 2023 as we’re super optimistic about 2024.

Coming off the back of a stellar 2021 & 2022, this year was an awakening in how to manage a business in a downturn, and for many of us, this was a new skill as we’ve enjoyed such buoyant markets for so long.

Canda is heavily wedded to the UK start-up sector. We love innovation, the people, and the chance to contribute to some big, game-changing outcomes for the world. However, this does leave us exposed when the cost of capital rises and VC investment nosedives, leaving far fewer opportunities for us to do our magic.

It's been a tough year for pretty much everyone in our market, and we've seen people in horrible situations where they're backed into corners and their dreams are put on the line. No one said being a founder or working at a startup was easy, but we've seen this year take its toll on the very best of them.

However, if you survived this year and have come out of it growing stronger, a massive congrats. If not, condolences, but we hope, like us, you've learned something new about the tough times.

We're very lucky at Canda that we still have a portfolio of ambitious and resilient customers, and after restructuring our business and developing new service lines that better suit the needs of our customers, we are going to enter 2024 in a good position, and our ambition will never waver. We have big plans for next year.

So as we sign off, we wish you all a great Christmas and New Year. Relax, sleep, eat, and enjoy time with the people you love. In 2024, there is a lot of work to be done.
