Thank A Trucker!
“Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin', we're gonna do what they say can't be done.” (from the theme song of "Smoky and The Bandit") --- as sung by Jerry Reed (born in Atlanta in 1937 - died in 2008)
Good Sunday afternoon all and welcome to this edition, No. 94, of "With That Said" (WTS), an almost-weekly newsletter powered by your friends here at Supply Chain Now . Let's start today by taking a moment to recognize & celebrate National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, which kicks off today (September 15th) and runs through September 21st.
According to the American Trucking Associations : "National Truck Driver Appreciation Week is an important time for America to thank all the professional truck drivers for their hard work and commitment in undertaking one of our economy's most demanding and important jobs. This weeklong celebration honors the professional truck drivers who deliver America's freight safely and securely every day. These 3.5 million professional men and women not only deliver our goods safely, securely, and on time, but they also keep our highways safe."
Here are a few fun facts about the U.S. trucking industry:
The trucking industry moves about 11 billion tons of goods yearly across the United States. In fact, about 70% of all goods are moved at some point by a truck. 91% of all lumber, 92% of all foods, 65% of all pharmaceuticals and a whole bunch more is moved by a truck. As you might imagine, the trucking industry is an extraordinary contributor to our nation's economy & GDP, as according to the ATA, the industry generated about $941 BILLION in gross freight revenues in 2022.
There are 13 million trucks registered in the U.S., of which, 2.9 million are tractor-trailers. Of the 3.5 million truck drivers, about 587,000 are self-employed drivers, which are typically referred to as owner operators. Learn more about the owner operator model here in a blog from our friends at Schneider .
We bet you've heard that there's a driver shortage for years in the trucking industry, right? Here's an interesting take, where Lars Offerdahl with Anderson Trucking Service offers his perspective that seeks to debunk the driver shortage myth, as well as more accurately explain what the industry is seeing when it comes to that critical human element: the professional truck driver. Lars states: "The prevailing belief in a driver shortage sparks a labyrinth of complexities. I’ll start by answering the question simply: No, there isn’t a truck driver shortage right now. In fact, we have a surplus of drivers." Check out the rest here .
The SCN team has enjoyed interviewing a variety of truck drivers over the years:
"What I want to impress on people is the importance of the trucking industry. Without our industry, life as they know it would not exist. Everything that they put their hands on has been delivered by a truck. They need to realize the importance of this industry and the sacrifice that drivers make so that they can have all the things that make their life comfortable," said April Coolidge, an award-winning professional truck driver with Walmart. Check out the replay of this episode from 2021 here .
On a separate episode from a few years back, trucking industry dynamo Kellylynn McLaughlin joined SCN and spoke about adventure, meeting new people, and touring facilities. She made driving a truck more like an expedition than a job. Kellylynn is a professional OTR driver and back in 2020, she was appointed as Schneider’s first-ever "Women in Trucking’ Driver Ambassador". This initiative was part of the company's diversity recruitment program to encourage new people to consider a career in trucking. In this conversation, Kellylynn joins co-hosts Scott Luton and Ward Richmond, SIOR , to share her view of life on the road. Check out the replay via YouTube here .
On one of Jenny Froome 's many appearances here on SCN, she brought her friend & industry leader Nicci Scott Anderson to the show to talk about her company's work when it comes to "Challenging Supply Chain Norms in South Africa". Jenny & Scott spoke with Nicci about her passion when it comes to training & developing new drivers, especially female drivers. Nicci shared: "It has been quite a revelation for me to realize that we were not only setting women up for a skill and an occupation, but also changing the dynamic of their family. For many of them, they were the first woman in their family to have a driver's license." Check out the replay via YouTube here .
Lastly, back in 2022, professional truck driver Joey Thiessen with Southeastern Freight Lines joined Scott to offer up perspective & experience from the road. The pride of Dacula, Georgia, Joey wanted to share some of the most important things about trucking with our audience, including: "The biggest thing is just the sacrifice that logistics professionals and drivers do on a daily basis." Take a listen to that episode here .
To professional truck drivers everywhere, here in the U.S. and abroad: THANK YOU!
