Thank HR It’s Friday! The value of returners ??????

The HR World has this week, for no apparent reason, been wondering about the value of returners.
You know the situation. Someone who’s been with the business for a reasonable amount of time decides it’s time to part company. Maybe they had a better offer someplace else, maybe they were in demand from another organisation, maybe it was just time for them to go (maybe you pushed them?).And then, a few years later they’re back. Maybe, to your surprise, their CV shows up in a pile. Maybe things weren’t going so great for them elsewhere and, when they thought about it, they were better off with you. Maybe you and your co-workers actually decided you wanted them back and you went out to get them (unlikely I know, but).
On the positive side, returners bring with them a truck load of knowledge about your organisation. They know what it does, how it works, how it’s meant to do it – give or take the odd updated process. They understand the brand – unless, of course, that’s moved on. And even if they’ve had a somewhat checkered career since leaving you, they still have lots of potential (check out our upcoming webinar on employing ex-offenders https://www.thehrworld.co.uk/hr-event/webinar/employing-ex-offenders-dont-lock-out-1-in-4-applicants/!).
There’s the chance, of course, that the returner thinks they know everything, or that they know better than the diligent workers around them. Some careful management may be required to ensure their re-integration goes smoothly and that they understand exactly what’s going on – rather than jumping in with both feet according to what they think your business needs. Returners may have a sense of entitlement - that they really know what is best and that being allowed back gives them the right to dictate everything.
It’s an interesting scenario for sure, and one which may need careful management if that employee is to have a successful time back in your workplace. But one thing’s for sure, there can be fewer more enthusiastic workers for your workplace, even if that enthusiasm isn’t always heading in the right direction.
