Thank HR It’s Friday! How to Make Happy
The HR World
A unique network of HR professionals aimed at furthering the future of work
As the rain pelted down on the office windows and the usual animated team meeting was delayed by another half hour as another employee texted in delayed by floods, The HR World could scarce believe it really was The International Week of Happiness at Work (No it really was. Just then. Look it up.)
Absent-mindedly flicking a Royal Mail elastic band across the room, targeting the rather sad looking Yukka, The HR World contemplated better times and decided special days were better than special weeks anyway. After all, was it possible to be happy at work ALL week? Sounds tiring.
There was International Pillow Fight Day (1st April) for example. Lost Sock Memorial Day (9th May). Talk Like Yoda Day (surely that should be Yoda Day Talk Like It Is) (21st May).
But if you really want to be happy at work apparently you need to be a Dog Photographer. They don’t make heaps of money, but according to a study that scampered across The HR World’s virtual desk, care of Bubblegum Search (who I’m sure are very happy with themselves), Dog Photographers are extremely happy people. Hardly surprising. What with the dogs. And the photographs. And the dogs are clearly important here as 'non-dog specific' photographers rank as only ‘happy’ rather than ‘very happy’.
Animators also score highly on happiness (albeit for small periods of time before moving on very slightly). Video Game Developers are very happy, while Video Game Testers have only mixed satisfaction levels. Make of that what you will.
At the end of day, decided The HR World, or maybe at the end of the week, happiness is actually in the intention of the employee. And we are but the facilitators of that happiness, providing opportunities, support, and chance encounters with where happiness may reside. The bedraggled team member arrives, the meeting animates. The cleaner files a complaint about rubber bands being left lying around to choke up their hoover.
Find your enjoyment where you can. Nurture it, share it, write a blog about it. You never know who you might’ve given a smile to. ??
