THANK GOD FOR LIBRARIES

Libraries are the Birthplace of Dreams

Dr. Carla Hayden, former director of Enoch Pratt Free Library and current Librarian of Congress, talks about her new position, the things she will miss at Enoch Pratt Free Library and why she is commuting to Washington D.C. from Baltimore. (Amy Davis, Baltimore Sun video)?(Baltimore Sun)

President Barack Obama's election broke a thick glass ceiling and we are all better off from his having been president. He broke another ceiling in naming the Pratt's own Carla Hayden to lead the Library of Congress ("New librarian of Congress Carla Hayden taking over organization in turmoil,"?Sept. 14).

The Senate has confirmed her as the first woman to serve as librarian of Congress, and I hope to be in Washington for her swearing in.

During my childhood, the books on the shelves at the Walbrook branch of the Enoch Pratt Free Public Library were identical to those at the Roland Park branch, and dreams grew in those libraries.

Thank you Mr. President. If you ever want someone to draft emergency legislation that would suspend the Constitution to allow you to serve a third term, I've already prepared a draft and memorandum of support. Just call.
