Thames Valley Toastmasters - Goal Setting
It’s the first week of January.? So far, I’ve: eaten copious amounts of greens, woken up before the crack of dawn to organize, plan, and reflect, exercised some (Pickleball) been on social media less (except for LinkedIn, it doesn’t count) and have read more “actual” articles.? I’m exhausted.
Experts give my New Year’s Resolutions about another month before they fizzle out.? I think they’re being too generous. The only reason I’m still waking up early is because of cat.
Like many other clubs, Toastmasters groups are leaping back into action this week after a short holiday break. The theme for many first meetings of the new year is, come on, I bet you know what it is… yep.? Goal setting. While the topic may be cliche, I always find it fascinating to see what goals people set for themselves.??
TableTopics Tonight
For tonight’s Thames Valley Toastmasters Meeting (you can still swing by as a guest, if you like), that is indeed, our theme.? As TableTopics Lead, I will be asking participants to speak for 2 minutes, off the cuff, or extemporaneously, on a given goal, which I will be providing.? The participants will be using their critical thinking skills to expand on it, to outline a short but concise strategy to manifest this goal, and to consider the potential outcome or impact that successful completion of this goal may have on their lives.

For example: “My goal is world domination.”? Well, first of all, that’s a little too broad and lacks specificity. What exactly will you dominate and how will you do this?? Break it down into short, actionable steps.? Corral an accountability partner (as long as they don’t have the same goal as you; that might get awkward), reflect regularly, adjust as needed, evaluate setbacks as learning opportunities, and move on.
In all seriousness, having goals is important.? We all need our North Stars. If one of your goals is to develop your communication skills, drop on by.? That’s the first, doable, step.
Now excuse me, I’ve got to figure out how to make brussel sprouts & kale more edible.??
