Thai Petroleum Company Experiments with Blockchain Energy Trading
Dima Zaitsev shares his thoughts on blockchain use cases
A Thai petroleum firm, Bangchak Corporation Public Co. (BCP) is testing an energy trading platform and commercial microgrid.
BCP is implementing the platform at a shopping mall attached to one of its fuel stations in Bangkok. The new system will use a combination of solar and batteries to both supply energy to the fuel station and power individual vendors in the mall.
The system uses the Green Community Energy Management System (GEMS) and will run on the Ethereum blockchain. BCP wants to ensure the system works on a small scale before applying it to their other power stations across the country.
The system is designed to reduce users’ electricity costs and reduce emissions, which are a health concern in Bangkok. Dima Zaitsev hopes the tests go well, “energy trading is one of the most common sense blockchain use cases. The poor air quality in Bangkok only stresses how much of a necessity widespread adoption is.”
