They're doing it. they're using nuclear weapons sites to produce clean energy! How awesome is that?

This is truly Good News!

The U.S. Department of Energy is transforming former nuclear weapons sites into solar farms as part of its "Cleanup to Clean Energy" initiative. The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) will soon host a 400-megawatt solar farm across 2,800 acres. This project involves a lease agreement with Massachusetts-based NorthRenew Energy for 300 megawatts of solar power, and another developer, Spitfire, was awarded a lease for 100 megawatts and 500 megawatts of battery storage. These solar farms are intended to power thousands of homes, symbolizing a shift from land once designated for nuclear deterrence to land contributing to clean energy solutions.

Other potential sites for similar solar projects include the Hanford site in Washington state, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico, the Nevada National Security Site, and the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. These sites, which were previously used for testing, training, and producing nuclear weapons materials, are now being repurposed to support renewable energy. U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm emphasized the importance of this transformation, highlighting the collaboration with community leaders and private sector partners to deploy clean energy solutions that enhance energy independence and contribute to environmental sustainability.
