TFF #28 - 7 types of rest to avoid burnout in 2023.

Hello 2023!

Welcome to a brand new year and all the fabulous new opportunities that are coming your way!

I can feel it, can you feel it?

Alright, I'm back after taking what felt like a very long break.

I'll be honest with you: I was burned out.

After finishing up the year with my 1:1 coaching clients, my creativity, drive, and inspiration were flat as a pancake.

I'd never experienced this before. It was tough.

Why? Well, I put it down to underestimating and mismanaging my energy.

As an introvert, I need to switch off to recharge. And guess what? I wasn't doing enough of that.

So I needed to power down for a month and recharge... which got me thinking, "What on earth am I going to talk about in the first newsletter of 2023!?"

7 types of rest to avoid burnout: perfect!

Let's dive in.

1/ Physical rest:

We all know that we need between 6-8 hours of sleep per day. But did you know there are passive and active physical rest.

Passive:

  • sleeping 6-8+ hours nightly
  • powernaps

Active rest includes:

  • stretching
  • reclining in a ergonomic chair

2/ Mental Rest

Mental rest is important for allowing your mind to relax and recharge. This is caused by overtaxing your thinking. Try these to get some mental rest:

  • reading a book
  • meditating, or
  • write down your to-do lists

3/ Emotional rest

Emotional rest is about taking time to process and cope with difficult emotions. Sometimes it can occur when you feel like you can't be authentic.

If this resonates, try these ideas:

  • talking to a therapist
  • journaling, or
  • spending time with friends and family where you can be authentic

4/ Social rest

Social rest is about taking time to disconnect from social media and other forms of technology. This was a big one for me.

Ways to alleviate this:

  • spending time offline
  • simply taking a break from socialising
  • spend more time with people who give you energy
  • block out time alone (if you're an introvert)

5/ Creative rest

Creative rest is about taking time to engage in activities that allow you to express yourself creatively.

I'm sure many of you can relate to this one.

Try to seek out natural ways to appreciate beauty:

  • go for a walk in a park or in nature
  • sit and watch a sunset or sunrise

or go and appreciate some:

  • art in a museum
  • inspiring music
  • empowering books
  • mind-stretching documentaries

6/ Spiritual rest

Spiritual rest is about taking time to connect with your inner self and your sense of purpose.

Try things like:

  • meditation (try this I promise it'll change your life)
  • spending time in nature
  • volunteering
  • create purpose in your job

7/ Professional rest

Professional rest is about taking time to disconnect from work and focus on other aspects of your life.

This could include:

  • taking a holiday/vacation
  • disconnecting from work-related activities during non-work hours
  • limit video meetings that drain your energy
  • turn off notifications (this is a game changer!)
