The Textile Industry: Facing a New Set of Challenges
The global textile industry employs millions of people and contributes billions of dollars to the economy on a global scale. However, the industry is facing a number of challenges, including rising raw material costs, increased competition from low-cost producers, growing demand for sustainable textiles, compliance with environmental regulations, labour issues, and waste management.
Rising Raw Material Costs :?
The price of raw materials, such as cotton, the global supply and demand has increased significantly in the past five years. This has put pressure on textile manufacturers' margins and has led to some manufacturers switching to other materials, such as polyester. This is due to a number of factors, including increased demand for cotton from emerging economies, such as China and India, and the fact that cotton is a water-intensive crop, which has become more expensive to grow.?
Countries like China and India have significant cost advantages in the textile industry, making it difficult for manufacturers in other countries to compete. This is because of a number of factors, including lower labour costs, lower environmental regulations, and government subsidies.
Growing Demand for Sustainable Textiles :?
Consumers are increasingly demanding sustainable textiles, which puts pressure on manufacturers to adopt more sustainable practices. This is because they are concerned about the environmental impact of the textile industry, which is a major polluter of water and air. In 2022, the sustainable textile market size was valued at USD 45.8 billion and is poised to grow at a significant CAGR of 11.2% over 2023-2029. Compliance with Environmental Regulations :?
The textile industry is subject to a complex web of environmental regulations. These regulations vary from country to country, but they can be costly to comply with. In 2019, the textile industry accounted for approximately 20% of global water pollution and 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This is a challenge for textile manufacturers, who need to balance the cost of compliance with the need to protect the environment.?
Labour Issues :
According to International Labour Organisation in 2021 - The number of children in child labour had risen to 160 million worldwide – an increase of 8.4 million children in the last four years. The textile industry has been criticised for labour abuses, such as child labour and forced labour. This is a challenge for the industry, as it needs to ensure that its products are made in a way that respects human rights.
Waste Management :?
The textile industry generates a significant amount of waste. In 2022, it was estimated that 92 million tons of textile waste was produced worldwide. This waste can be difficult to manage and can pollute the environment. Textile manufacturers need to find ways to reduce their waste and recycle or compost what they do produce.
These are the major challenges that the textile industry is facing today. By taking steps to address these challenges, the textile industry can ensure its long-term sustainability.
Industry & Management expert.
1 年It's now the high time to lay emphasis on capacity building and competitiveness of the textile industry to make an inroad in the global market. The industry has to confine in developing & under developing countries only in future as global contribution of textile industry in GDP is very nominal. It's just 2% as developed countries contribution is almost negligible. It's the full contribution of the countries mostly from Asia. Such industry contributes well in respective country's GDP including India. Besides this, employment opportunities also created. Hence Govt. should be serious and consult all stakeholders to frame well structured policy to bring out the industry from backseat. Otherwise, it will damage a lot.
