Texas Association of Business News - November 26, 2024

Glenn Hamer, President & CEO

Fellow Texans –

As we prepare to join friends and family for the Thanksgiving holiday this week, we want to encourage you all to shop small and shop local this weekend in celebration of Small Business Saturday on November 30th! The vast majority of businesses in Texas are small businesses, employing nearly 5 million people across the Lone Star State!

Last week, we saw major developments impacting the Texas business community, including the announcement of the first Semiconductor Innovation Fund (TSIF) grant, made possible through the Texas CHIPS Act, underscoring Texas’ pivotal role in advancing semiconductor research and manufacturing to support our state and nation’s economic and national security. Read more about this important announcement in my blog post from last week.

Additionally, last week Governor Greg Abbott and the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT) unveiled a strong plan to further strengthen Texas’ global energy leadership by unveiling the Texas Advance Nuclear Reactor Working Group’s final report on Texas’ plan to build a “world-leading advanced nuclear power industry” to enhance both reliability and security ?of our grid. We are especially proud to recognize Stephanie Matthews, former TAB Vice President, for her invaluable contributions as a member of the Working Group that produced this report. Read more about Texas’ growing leadership in advanced nuclear energy here.

Over the weekend, President-elect Donald Trump announced several prominent Texas leaders to the highest levels of government, demonstrating the importance of the Lone Star State in shaping the future of our nation during the forthcoming administration. TAB congratulates these exceptional Texas leaders who are set to take the reins at three incredibly consequential federal agencies:

·????? John Ratcliffe – CIA Director

·????? Scott Turner – Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)

·????? Brooke Rollins – Secretary of Agriculture

We look forward to working with them and all new cabinet members to ensure our state’s core principles are reflected in key decisions impacting the economy, national security, and our business environment. Read more about the significance of these appointments in today’s TAB blog.

At TAB, our Board and members have access to detailed information and intelligence on what’s going on at the State Capitol in Austin, Washington, D.C., and internationally, with the goal of ensuring our state’s business leaders have the tools and resources to succeed at the state, national, and global levels.

If you’re a business owner in Texas and not yet a TAB Member we would love for you to consider joining TAB.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the 2nd Annual North American Manufacturing Conference, hosted by TAB member?CONCAMIN?in partnership with Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME) and the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). The conference emphasized the critical role of the USMCA agreement in fostering trade, supporting manufacturing growth, and enhancing North America’s economic competitiveness. With the agreement’s review set for 2026, the discussions reinforced the importance of preserving and strengthening this cornerstone of our regional economy. It was a pleasure speaking with CONCAMIN President?Alejandro Malagón,?Senator Waldo Fernández, President of the USMCA Oversight Committee in the Senate of the Republic of Mexico, and?Carlos Garza?and?José Manuel Bulas, with Cemex. Thank you to CONCAMIN for the invitation to such an impactful and timely event.

Help Shape the Future of Water Infrastructure

Texas is a beacon for growth, but with that growth comes challenges. According to the 2022 State Water Plan and U.S. EPA data, the state needs at least $154 billion over the next 50 years in water supply projects and infrastructure upgrades to meet rising demands. Without action, Texas could face a loss of one million jobs and $192 billion in economic impact.

TAB is leading the effort to engage chambers across the state on this issue. If water funding is an issue important to your chamber, please consider filling out the below form to indicate support for this important initiative. We are looking forward to working together to advocate for sustainable water infrastructure solutions.
