Tether freezes $27 million in USDT from sanctioned Russian exchange Garantex

Stablecoin Issuer Tether froze $27 million in USDT on sanctioned Russian crypto exchange Garantex, which forced the platform to shut down.

Tether entered the war against the Russian crypto market and blocked our wallets worth more than 2,5 billion rubles [$27 million], — the official Telegram-channel Garantex 6 March.

The exchange has temporarily suspended all services, including withdrawals, and its website is currently undergoing maintenance.

Team Garantex also warned its users that “all USDT in Russian wallets is currently under threat.”

Earlier, on February 26, the European Union introduced sanctions against Garantex within the framework of the 16th package of restrictions due to "Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine." In fact, this happened three years after the start of the special military operation.

The first sanctions against Garantex was introduced in the United States in April 2022, with the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Treasury Department responsible for this.
