While we have our ears to the ground in San Francisco, waiting for the key highlights and themes to emerge from GDC, there’s still plenty going on across the games industry, including insights from Unity’s Gaming Report, the launch of a new Sony first-party studio, a spotlight on one of Roblox’s top developers and, of course, more Nintendo Switch 2 rumours…

90% of Devs’ Most Recent Games Launched on Mobile: Unity’s Gaming Report 2025 has revealed a 34% year-on-year increase in studios focusing on three or more platforms, according to Pocketgamer.biz, with mobile leading the charge. PC followed in second place, with 80% of developers recent releases arriving in that format. The report also reveals that in 2024, across all platforms, games reached over three billion players and notched up more than $184 billion in revenue.?

According to the Report, mobile was the most lucrative platform for the majority of smaller development teams, with 75% of studios with fewer than 10 staff achieving most of their revenue from mobile. Some 65% of studios with 10-49 employees reported the same. Meanwhile, despite the challenges being felt in some parts of the industry, 88% of the studios surveyed highlighted a rise in their gamers’ ‘playtime’, with 32% of those reporting it to be a “major increase”.

Assassin's Creed Maker Ubisoft Could Create New IP Unit to Court Major Investors: Is Ubisoft looking to set up a dedicated division focused on its key intellectual properties? That’s the suggestion from Game Developer, which highlights a report by Bloomberg, which claims that the French publisher is looking to sell a minority stake in the new division to investors. The article surfaces Ubisoft’s latest fiscal briefing when it told investors that it would take “decisive steps” to reshape its business, as well as continuing to “drive significant cost reductions”. PlayStation Forms New First-Party Studio Dark Outlaw Games: What has been confirmed is that Sony has launched a new studio, led by industry veteran Jason Blundell. According to Gamesindustry.biz, Blundell has worked in the games industry for over 20 years, having been the studio co-head at Treyarch, and one of the lead creators on Call of Duty Zombies. The new studio, Dark Outlaw Games, was rumoured last year, but has only just been announced, and is currently building its team to work on an unknown project. Nintendo Switch 2 Rumours: Everything You Need to Know: Another week, another round or rumours about Nintendo’s upcoming handheld, this week courtesy of The Independent. It suggests that Switch 2 could arrive in the first week of June, is likely to cost around $400, and lists a flurry of titles expected at launch, including big franchises such as Mario Kart, Final Fantasy, Assassin’s Creed, Metal Gear Solid, Pokemon, Metroid Prime, and Dragon Ball. With Nintendo gearing up for ‘hands-on experience days’ from next week, it would seem that official news will be coming soon. ‘I Skipped College to Make Games - Now I'm Roblox's Top Developer’: And finally this week, the BBC puts the spotlight on 32 year-old Osian Taubman-Edwards from Wales, who has created over 20 games for Roblox and is ranked among the top 250 creators out of 300,000. He boasts over 11 billion visits to his profile every month, with five million new people playing his games each month.
