Is testing your passion? It is not mine.
Between 2011 and 2015, I did freelance testing for the best crowd source testing company in the world, uTest.com.
I participated in approximately 1000 project cycles, logged almost 3000 bugs and tested around 300 products.
I was also uTester Of The Year (in 2012), gold rated tester for functional and localization testing (not anymore due to no activity), premier tester, test team lead and uTest instructor.
All this time, I thought that testing is my passion.
I enjoyed a lot testing applications.
Finding bugs.
Discussing the issues with the developers.
Seeing the issues fixed.
And being paid for doing this.
I thought that I was pretty good at testing and the uTest clients that I was working for seemed to agree with me.
But not all projects were like this.
Sometimes, my bugs would be rejected for reasons that I couldnt comprehend or considered low priority.
And this would happen after spending significant amounts of time on testing the product.
Which led to the conclusion that, for the many hours spent testing, I got no appreciation for my work.
And maybe the equivalent of a McDonalds meal.
I was so frustrated in these cases.
And puzzled since I thought that testing was my passion.
But what does passion mean?
Passion: a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something
This means that if you are passionate about something, you do that thing for itself and not for other reasons.
If testing is your passion, you test even if you are not paid.
Even if you have to do it in your free time instead of spending the time with the family or your friends.
You do it even if no one looks at what you do and even if no one likes what you do.
Looking again at testing, I had to re-evaluate.
I did not like testing an application for many hours in a row with no appreciation for my work.
When all my bugs were rejected.
When I would be paid nothing or close to nothing.
So, no passion for testing then?
Yes, as sad as it seems to sound, no passion for testing.
I still enjoyed testing a lot.
But in certain conditions.
If it is not a passion, is it a hobby then?
What is testing for you?
