Crowdstrike Out(ages)
At the time of writing (19th July 2024) numerous businesses, banks, and key infrastructure providers (including airlines, and emergency services) are in chaos due to a recent update to CrowdStrike, a cyber security solution used by Microsoft. The solution is a core element of Microsoft's operating system and the faulty update has caused numerous blue screens of death and brought many servers and services to a halt.
CrowStrike is currently investigating the cause of the issue, and trying to firefight the outages. Whilst the source of this major issue is not yet confirmed there is a Reddit thread and a BBC Live with updates for those interested.
One key takeaway we can note is that this could have been avoided with thorough integration testing and compatibility testing. Next time feel free to reach out CrowdStrike!
Easter Bunny Exposed
Back in our April newsletter, we covered the Rabbit R1, the AI-powered handheld assistant that came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest gadgets at CES 2024. The little Rabbit aims to enhance its user's lives with AI to help make their lives a little easier.
We decided to take a look back at the Rabbit R1 as since its announcement people have been really putting it to the test, finding limitations and bugs in the product, however, the most concerning issue was found recently when a group of jail breakers found a major security flaw in the Rabbit’s code.
They found that the Rabbit R1 had API keys hardcoded into the company’s codebase. These API keys provided the Rabbit with accounts access to third-party services like its text-to-speech provider, ElevenLabs. But by having access to these API keys the jail breakers group found that they could access every response ever given by R1 devices. Which is a major major problem.
Since the leak Rabbit’s team looks to have been fixing the issue and responded to reporters' comments by pointing them to this page. It looks like Rabbit’s team should have done some more testing before release.

AT&T’s $370,000 Security Fix
US telecom giant AT&T disclosed Friday that they paid the $370k ransom to a member of the notorious hacker group ShineyHunters to delete the stolen call data of tens of millions of their customers. The data was stolen through unsecured Snowflake cloud storage accounts, similar to how hackers stole the data of Ticketmaster customers previously. The cloud provider has blamed its customers for not taking adequate steps to protect their data, whilst critics of them claim Snowflake didn’t do enough to protect customers.
This highlights how even titans of industry can face expensive issues if they don’t keep regularly security testing to ensure their customer's safety.
