AI’s role in making inclusive software that leads to growth

In 2023, Tech companies were rushing to implement AI tools at a lightening-fast pace. This need for speed led to a degree of carelessness and meant thorough software testing hadn’t been completed; as such, PR disasters were quick to spring up.

Some of the worst cases were when Microsoft’s ChatGPT-enhanced search engine Bing started using racial slurs and planning world domination. Or when Google’s Bard tool famously answered a question about a telescope incorrectly in a live demo wiping $100. billion from the company’s value. Following this, an overcorrection led to claims of “woke” bias as tools seemed unwilling to produce images of white people under certain prompts.

This has led to companies like Microsoft taking a refreshed approach to AI with a focus on testing and ensuring diversity and inclusion are involved to ensure positive UX experiences as well as accessibility to all. With Microsoft saying AI can be a tool to promote equality and representation with the right testing and safeguards.

This new approach involved integrating diversity in the software development cycle from the start, and consulting with experts with diverse backgrounds to ensure that the products are rigorously tested and trained by a more diverse group of developers, engineers, and researchers at each step of the way to avoid biases.

In the case of Microsoft, this more accessible approach has given them a more competitive advantage and brought a new life to the nearly 50-year-old brand. In July, the company reported revenue for the year was up 15% to $64.7 Billion largely led by its AI-enhanced products such as Azure Cloud.

AI can be a serious boon to a company, but the past has proven that establishing in-depth testing and advocating for the inclusion of diversity early into the software it a must. This enhanced digital accessibility opens opportunities to businesses and can offer unparalleled growth by acting as a serious competitive advantage.

AI Network Deployments Performance Challenges

There is no denying the rapid growth of AI and the number of companies trying to find ways of incorporating it into their digital solutions. However, this rapid growth has led to some looming issues, chiefly among them the need to reconfigure their network architectures.

“Current networks were never designed for the demands of AI” notes Zeus Karravala industry analyst. He’s right, the network demand of Generative AI and Large-Language Models is very different from that of well-known models like cloud computing. There is no ‘caching’ AI content is dynamically created for every request. Whilst this is great for pushing boundaries it can also seriously clog networks.

Unlike the well-understood flow of network traffic that flows between web and mobile apps and cloud servers. AI tends to have stop-start, traffic demands that can be massive, two-way, and costly. This congestion from AI traffic ?can hog bandwidth and crowd out other applications

This has led many businesses to look at moving away from centralized methods and is why we have seen the rise of data centers (that are struggling to keep up with demand as is). For this reason, streamlining networks for maximized performance and ensuring software security in decentralised networks reliant on edge servers and regional points of presence is vital.

Finding the right team with experience in AI software optimization and software security to streamline your services, ensure maximum efficiency, and security is vital for any business with an AI-integrated product. Luckily, TestDevLab has that expertise, reach out to us to get in contact and find out how you can optimise your services.

In Future Vision, we aim to give you an insight into the hottest upcoming tech world developments.

In this edition, we’re in the UK where one school is pushing the boundaries of AI in education.

David Game Collage, a private school in London, will launch the UK’s first “teacher-less” high school class this year. 20 students facing their end-of -school exams will learn using a mixture of artificial intelligence and virtual reality headsets

The platforms used will learn what the student’s strengths and weaknesses are and adapt the lesson plans for the term, so each student gets a tailored experience. Strong topics will be left till the end of the school year to review before exams while weaker subjects will get more time dedicated to them.

AI will not lead the students alone, however, there will be 3 learning coaches to monitor behavior and give support, as well as teachers for subjects such as art, where AI is weaker.

Proponents of this new method claim AI will help target student’s weaknesses and help on an individual level. Whilst opponents such as Chris McGoven former education advisor for the UK’s government claim "It's a soulless, bleak future if it's going to be along the AI path only”, and that this method takes away the student’s school experience and vital interpersonal skills.

Parents interested in enrolling their students in this course will have to pay £27,000.

Will AI take over teaching or just be an aid to the current education system? Only time will tell. One thing is for sure, trusting AI with our children’s education will require some serious AI testing to safeguard future generations using this tech.
