According to The Information, Tesla is advancing its largest battery project in its 21 years of existence. The company is designing and developing four versions of 4680 batteries using a dry process and plans to launch them in 2026.
Tesla has launched four new versions of battery projects at the same time, which is the most battery projects Tesla has ever carried out at the same time. The four new batteries that the company plans to launch in 2026 include batteries for driverless taxis Robotaxi, electric trucks Cybertruck and other electric vehicles.
Four years ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk first announced the 4680 battery at the Battery Day event. Compared with the previous generation 2170 battery, the 4680 battery has achieved a 5-fold increase in single cell energy, and a 6-fold leap in both power and power output.
Despite numerous challenges, such as the difficulty in producing dry cathode batteries with a high yield rate, Tesla remains ambitious and vows to increase the yield rate to 90% by the end of the year.
The company plans to achieve mass production in the second quarter of 2025 and launch four subsequent versions of dry cathode 4680D batteries in 2026. Among them, the battery with the internal code name NC05 will be used for Robotaxi. The battery code-named NC20 is suitable for SUV, Cybertruck and other models; NC30 and NC50 will be Tesla's first batteries to use silicon-carbon materials in the anode.

It is understood that the dry process can produce thicker electrodes than the traditional wet process, which helps to significantly increase the energy density of the battery. Tesla acquired Maxwell for US$218 million in 2019, thereby acquiring dry electrode technology.
Tesla continues to work on developing more efficient, lower-cost battery technology and applying it to various types of vehicles.
