LinkedIn has been through significant changes over the past couple of years, and one area that has undergone a transformation is the role of hashtags. Once considered essential for increasing reach and discoverability on the platform, but now their importance has shifted.
Here I will delve into the historical use of hashtags on LinkedIn and explore why they are no longer the powerhouse they once were.
Added Value of Hashtags in the Past:
In the past, hashtags held a prominent place in LinkedIn posts. They were believed to boost reach by 10% to 25% when using 3 to 10 hashtags.
Personal hashtags were beloved to add a 10% reach boost for accounts with over 1,000 followers.
Specific hashtags made posts easier to find in searches, and they could get your content in front of those following the hashtag.
The Shift in Hashtag Impact:
Recent analyses reveal a different story. Hashtags no longer significantly impact post reach. Personal hashtags offer less than a 5% boost, only attributed to users being able to click on them to see all your posts.
Some months back, I embarked on an experiment where I stopped using hashtags in my posts for an entire week. The objective was to gauge how this change might influence the reach and engagement of my content. I discovered that it had no noticeable effect on either the reach or engagement levels of my posts.
LinkedIn's Experimentation and Its Impact:
LinkedIn has been running experiments recently, and one of them involves the gradual shutdown of hashtags. While this move might seem perplexing at first, it's part of what they call their 'hashtag ecosystem deep research'.
Maybe a little more comforting is the news that during this experiment not all users will experience this change simultaneously, but it's a planned experiment.
The Bigger Picture:
Will LinkedIn remove the hashtag functionality? In my opinion, the answer would be no, simply because hashtags act as a good reference point for content. However, the nature in which hashtags will be used going forward will change.

We are already seeing a different use of hashtags within Creator Mode and in the About section of the user profile.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, hashtags on LinkedIn are undergoing a big shift in their significance. While they were once instrumental in enhancing reach and discoverability, recent changes in LinkedIn's algorithm have rendered them less effective.
As social media platforms like LinkedIn continue to evolve, it's essential to adapt your strategy accordingly. Keep an eye on further developments, as the social selling landscape is ever-changing.
Final Thoughts:
Just as hashtags have evolved, so too should our approach to social selling. It's important to stay informed about platform changes, experiment with different content types, and engage authentically with your network.
In the dynamic world of LinkedIn, adaptability is key to staying ahead in social selling.

11 个月Welp, Terry Heath. The hashtags feature on the Company pages is officially removed. Probably because most people didn't understand how to use it, and the concept of engagement from a Company Page to the posts created by Individual profiles that happen to use the same industry hashtags as the brand. I really liked that feature because I was able to quickly engage with people as the brand, and now, it's going to take a few extra clicks to get the same results. LinkedIn - when can we please have 1 image to attach to the Poll feature? That's what I'm waiting for. ??
