Roughly Speaking: the Homeless in NYC, a play by Shara Ashley Zeiger

If you're looking for a deep and meaningful play in #NYC, I highly recommend #Roughly Speaking. The playwright, Shara Ashley Zeiger, had once been attacked late at night by a schizophrenic on the streets of New York, and had been very afraid of homeless people in the past. But she married a man who was dedicated to helping the homeless. Six years ago, the two began volunteering at Xavier Mission Welcome Table, and Zeiger's heart was moved to begin interviewing homeless people. She spent 2-and-a-half years writing this poignant play that shares their stories, interweaves rap music and advanced literary techniques. Hats off to her. This play was funded by Kickstarter, and let's help #RoughlySpeaking find its way to Broadway. It's well acted and well written, and keeps its subject matter moving in a way that is engaging and insightful.

Every ticket sold donates $3 to the homeless and at the end of the play, the audience is given resource booklets to share with those in need.

Even the lobby art supports the homeless. In this photo, playwright Zeiger poses with the playbill in front of a large piece of art in the lobby by artist Willie Baronet, who buys signs from homeless people on the streets (after asking them to determine how much they will sell their sign for.) He's been featured on Tedx and Upworthy.
