Dear Colleague,

Effective January 1, 2017, I will become Chair of the MFA Computer Art Department at the School of Visual Arts. My predecessor, Bruce Wands, will be stepping down from his day-to-day responsibilities to assume the role of Chair Emeritus and focus on his creative work, writing, and research. As the new Chair, I look forward to continuing the department’s tradition of excellence and mission to find new creative uses for emerging technologies and software. We are currently accepting applications for the 2017/2018 academic year and encourage your students to visit our website at mfaca.sva.edu to learn more about our program and vimeo.com/svamfaca to see 14 years of our best student work. We approach creativity and self-expression in a multidisciplinary way, and offer a progressive curriculum that includes studio work, theory, digital art history, and programming; state-of-the-art facilities; and a renowned faculty of over thirty-five digital artists/animators and industry leaders. While students generally focus on 3D animation, motion graphics and fine art, each student's course of study is individually tailored to his or her interests through meetings with the department advisor.

As Executive Professor of Animation and Founding Director of Creative Industries at Northeastern University, I led the creation of the undergraduate Game Design and Interactive Media programs in the College of Arts, Media & Design. My book CG101: A Computer Graphics Industry Reference is a standard text worldwide for both studio executives and students. I am also currently the CEO/Founder of Building Conversation, an augmented reality startup, and have 25 years of production experience. Having worked on more than 20 feature films including Hook, True Lies, Interview with the Vampire and three Star Wars movies, and numerous interactive projects such as SimCity4, Bruce Lee, Batman Dark Tomorrow and Alter Echo, I have a deep understanding of the professional production environment and look forward to passing this knowledge and experience on to our graduate students.

MFA Computer Art has distinguished itself with eight Student Academy Awards, and our graduates’ creative work has appeared in over 150 festivals and exhibitions during the past year alone. We have been recognized by US News & World Report, Animation Career Review, and lmagineFX as one of the top digital arts schools in the world. This is a reflection of the educational environment that we provide and the quality of students we attract to our program, who come from around the world to study at SVA. If you or your students have any questions about the MFA Computer Art program, please contact us directly.

Best Regards,

Terrence Masson
