Terrasos and Regen Network: Pioneering transparent and scalable markets for biodiversity credits through distributed ledger technology

Cali, Colombia - In response to global discussions at COP16, Terrasos and Regen Network are pleased to announce a partnership to advance the biodiversity crediting market through distributed ledger technology (DLT). This collaboration is focused on creating a high-integrity platform that addresses essential market needs—transparency, fairness, security, and scalability—to drive biodiversity conservation. The platform fully aligns with rigorous integrity frameworks.?

Our newly published white paper outlines this shared vision, describing how a transparent, technology-enabled platform can deliver fair, efficient, and reliable biodiversity credits, establishing a viable market for nature-based solutions.

According to Gregory Landua, CEO of Regen Network Development, “Distributed ledger technology provides the biodiversity crediting market with a level of transparency and traceability that would otherwise be difficult to achieve. By partnering with Terrasos, we are building a trusted, public reference where all project details are securely stored and verifiable by all stakeholders.”

At the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), discussions on building a robust, equitable, and cost-effective biodiversity crediting market have taken center stage. The conference underscores the importance of aligning financial investments with GBF’s ambitious goals, particularly Target 19, which seeks to mobilize significant resources for nature protection. As governments, institutions, and stakeholders open pathways for biodiversity markets, the need for scalable solutions that foster transparency and accountability becomes increasingly urgent.

Mariana Sarmiento, CEO of Terrasos, emphasized the importance of the partnership: “This collaboration reflects our commitment to a high-integrity biodiversity crediting market. We envision a future where biodiversity credits are accessible to all and backed by technology that ensures every transaction is secure, transparent, and easily verifiable. Our alliance demonstrates that two independent organizations can unite with a shared goal: fostering trust and long-term impact in biodiversity conservation.”

This partnership enables the issuance of voluntary biodiversity credits (Tebu), a pioneering tool in Latin America and globally. These credits support exceptional conservation projects within the emerging biodiversity market, allowing buyers to purchase 10 m2 of threatened ecosystems and secure their conservation for 30 years. This framework is governed by strict technical, financial, and legal standards, ensuring traceability, permanence, rigor, transparency, and additionality.

The approach adopted by Terrasos and Regen Network is underpinned by the belief in DLT’s capacity to secure biodiversity credits, claims, and reporting with long-term integrity. Using DLT to anchor data in a public, immutable format provides project developers, clients, indigenous groups, and local communities with reliable, real-time access to verified project information. This framework not only ensures robust transparency but also reduces the high costs of traceability and transparency typically seen in traditional markets.

David Fortson, Regen Network’s Chief Growth Officer, noted, “We are proud to supply the technology connecting buyers and sellers in a direct, disintermediated marketplace. Together, we’re establishing a scalable model that upholds the highest standards for responsible nature conservation.”

Through this partnership, Terrasos and Regen Network bring unique expertise to create a thriving biodiversity marketplace that meets the evolving needs of developers, communities, and clients while aligning with international biodiversity targets. This initiative sets a new standard for transparency and scalability, enhancing confidence in biodiversity credits and supporting the realization of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
