Tension Tagging
Have you ever been "Tension Tagged" by someone?
What is tension tagging?
Suppose something at work happened that created stress in myself. My anxiety built up as a result. I am unsure of what to do then. Without conscious awareness, I seek to relieve this tension.
I end up becoming emotionally reactive. I am edgy and waiting to take out my stress on someone and "tag" them with my own tension.
I see you and I argue with you over something trivial or say something mean or create a conflict. You are now “tagged” with tension that I passed on to you. Your anxiety starts to build. Without conscious awareness, you will tension tag someone else. You can watch this spread throughout the group. This group can be the work place or your friend's circle or your family.
You may have seen this happen before, but it's important to realize the role you may have played in tension tagging others. When you are tension tagged, try to take a moment to pause and breathe instead of passing on the tension. Sitting with your emotions can help you process and alleviate anxiety, allowing you to move forward without affecting those around you. Remember, your anxiety will pass, and you will be okay.
