Tennessee
I make no apology for this article being a little longer than normal, you could write a whole book on the wonderful state of Tennessee. They say Tennessee is suited to the young as the days are busy and the nights late, but I disagree. Tennessee is suited to everyone. If you love live music, great food and the great outdoors, then this state has it all in abundance. Tennessee is the birthplace of rock ’n’ roll and it is the world’s country music capital. It is home to numerous National Parks, including the Cherokee National Park, Shiloh National Military National Park and the wonderful Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Let me guide you through a brief summary of what this great state has to offer….
Memphis, the name itself conjures up so many memories, many of which are related to music. With world famous Beale street, legendary music attractions, the mighty Mississippi River, wonderful museums and classic southern & BBQ food at its heart, there is something for everyone. Who has not heard of Elvis Presley? Nobody! Arguably the most famous musician of all time, Elvis’s home at Graceland is one of America’s premier attractions. Take a look round the beautiful mansion, marvel at his collection of aircraft and cars, the wonderful individually created outfits that Elvis was famous for, memorabilia from his legendary career and listen to recordings of his incredible shows. For the ultimate Elvis experience, stay in the Guest House at Graceland hotel. Memphis is also the home of such legendary musicians as BB King, Al Green, Issac Hayes and from the modern era, Justin Timberlake. Beale Street is renowned throughout the world - 'America’s Most Iconic Street' - ‘The Official Home of the Blues’ & Tennessee’s Top Tourism Attraction’ are just some of this amazing streets accolades. Live music is everywhere, classic southern cuisine and legendary BBQ aromas make your mouth water, the atmosphere just lifts you up and carries you along on wave of euphoria. When you think of BBQ, think Memphis, which has over 100 BBQ restaurants offering eat in or take out - be sure to try real ‘Pit Barbecue” at somewhere like Leonard’s Pit Barbecue - my mouth is literally watering thinking about the ribs!!
Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and the location of the famous Tennessee & Vanderbilt Universities. However, it is world renowned as the home of country music. The city houses the Country Music Hall of Fame and the city’s fabulous and famous Music Row District. When visiting Nashville, a trip to ‘The Grand Ole Opry House’, home of the famous Grand Ole Opry stage and radio show is a must. One of the most popular things to do is ‘The Music City Walk of Fame’ which is located on Nashville’s ‘Music Mile’. Here a series of plaques dedicated to numerous artists highlight the cities amazing influence on music through the ages. Another great way to experience country music, is by taking the General Jackson Showboat for a night time cruise along the Cumberland River - the dinner and show option onboard this modern paddle steamer is especially popular. The city is home to a wonderful zoo and numerous historical sights, such as the Belle Meade Plantation and the Belmont Mansion.
Tennessee is home to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is America’s most visited national park. The area is famed for its amazing diversity of plant & animal life, the scenic beauty of its ancient mountains and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture. If you love the great outdoors, then this is the place for you. There are hiking, walking and biking trails aplenty, you can camp under the stars, gaze at a stunning waterfall as you feel the misty spray on your face or just take in some of the historic homes, mills and churches that the area is famous for. The Great Smoky Mountains are home to Black Bears, so always seek the advice of a ranger, especially if you are camping!
As you can see, Tennessee is a destination in its own right, a state combing fabulous cities, incredible music, mouth-watering food and spectacular great outdoors destinations. You might not think you like country music or blues, but once the likes of Memphis & Nashville get into your soul, you will love them forever.
