Ten Signs That You Are Getting Enough ROI From Your?Career

Is your time investment well-spent or is it a loss?

We spend more time working than any other activity besides sleep. That is a huge time and energy investment. It is important to ask yourself regularly if you are satisfied with what your career is giving back to you. Here are a few points to use as a checklist to evaluate your career ROI.

1/Your Material Needs Are Met

You are not struggling financially. You can pay all of your bills and your standard of living is quite good. You are able to purchase real estate, put aside money into various savings and investments, and don’t feel worried or anxious about money.

2/ You Feel Invigorated By Your Work 

Your job is challenging but never boring. You feel interested in and inspired by the company’s mission and your role in it, never drained or indifferent. No one can perform well for long if they are in a job that is sucking their energy dry.

3/ You Get to Use Your Strengths On the Job Every Day

If you are analytical, you get to analyze information in your job. If you are creative, the same thing. Whatever your role is, you are using your main strengths full force. As for your weaknesses, they are not at all part of your job requirement.

4/ You Have More Than One Source of Revenue

You don’t have to worry too much about job security because you have built multiple income streams. This takes the pressure off of doing something you don’t like and gives you the freedom to get more ROI out of your career vs. living paycheck to paycheck.

5/ You Are Given Recognition Within the Company

Your bosses acknowledge your efforts and praise you when praise is due. You have been promoted or are up for promotion. You are given more responsibility, exclusive opportunities, monetary bonuses, and exposure to key executives to boost your career.

6/ You Get Recognition Within Your Industry and/or City

You are nominated for industry or city awards, invited to speak at industry events, asked to judge an industry competition, have a thriving blog or publish regular articles in industry publications, regularly mentioned in conjunction with news in your industry, or offered a book deal.

7/ You Have Free Time

“Work hard, play hard”, right? What is the point of working hard if you can’t enjoy life? You are busy but you still manage to eat (some if not all evenings) dinner with your kids, exercise, practice a hobby, and go on vacation. 

8/ You Are Making Priceless Connections

Relationships are everything. Is your current career giving you exposure to the right people? Who you work for and with whom is sometimes equally or even more important than on what. 

9/ You See Clearly Where You Are Going Next

Your career is a series of decisions that are either an investment into your future or an expense against it. Does your current career align with where you are headed? Having a clear career plan is essential. Make sure each career decision matches your overall direction so you end up where you want to be.

10/ You Are Building A Legacy You Will Leave Behind

Ultimately, we all want our work to matter. What will people remember you for? Are your contributing to laying the foundation for the work of the future? Make your career count by using it for the greater good of society, if and how you can.

If you said ‘No’ to any of these points, you will know what to work on. It is recommended to have an internal review with yourself about your career at least once per year and of course whenever you change jobs.
