Ten Reasons To Meet in Milton Keynes

Home to the Delta by Marriott MK; this city has got it all from pioneering one of the earliest music videos and been the location for a bygone Hollywood filmset. From concrete jungle to a steel and glass skyline. Let’s not forget this city too is rich in entrepreneurial spirt and the origin of distance learning.

The Legend’, that is Cliff Richard in 1981, donned a pair of retro roller skates and whizzed around the town and centreMK for his ‘Wired for Sound’ music video.

Milton Keynes is actually the home of the UK's first ever multiplex cinema, The Point opened back in 1985 with 10 screens and state-of-the-art technology for the time constructed for a whopping £7.5 million, with today’s inflation that figure is closer to £225.5 million. The Central Milton Keynes train station featured in the 1987 film, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

No one single resident of Milton Keynes lives more than half-a-mile from a park or green space; Midsummer Boulevard was purposefully given its name as the sun rises at its eastern end on the summer solstice; architects persuaded engineers to shift the grid system a few degrees for this purpose.

Famous for its roundabouts, MK’s love affair with these concrete circles 130 and counting was never to be permeant; city plans illustrated that the iconic grid system based on the route plan of Los Angeles was supposed to have traffic lights installed which never happened.

Milton Keynes almost had a concrete jungle complete with concrete palm trees and concrete monkeys as its main tourist attraction. Other ideas were horse drawn carriage tours around the estates and parks and a model town representing a miniature Milton Keynes. None of the ideas came into fruition.

Milton Keynes has more bridges than Venice and a longer shoreline (around its lakes) than Jersey with 15 lakes and 11 miles of canals in and around the town; Red Bull Racing F1 team are based out of Milton Keynes winning four back-to-back Constructors and Drivers Championships between 2010-2013.

The concrete cows become a bit of local landmark, created in 1978 by Canadian artist Liz Leyh as a gift from the town’s development cooperation. They now reside in MK Museum, crafted from scrap materials donated by a local builder.

The Open University was the world’s first degree-awarding distance learning institution; since it opened in 1971 over 1,600,000 have studied with the Open University and together MK Council and MK Parks Trust maintain over 6,335 acres of public open space.
