I recently joined the
Ministry of National Guard Health Affairs (MNGHA)
in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and returned to clinical teaching. It has been a rewarding experience thus far. I wanted to develop some principles for learners and would appreciate any feed back or comments.
- Compassion and humility, they are what I consider to be the two most important attributes of a physician
- Honesty and transparency, if you don't know say so, if you haven't done something say so, it builds trust and without it relationships are worthless
- Work for your patients not your attending, you are a servant to their well being
- Leave every patient feeling better, they have been waiting 24 hours to see you, not giving the patient hope, education or emotional support on every visit, is failure
- Learn from your patients, there is an old medical saying, “To learn Medicine without books, is to sail uncharted waters, to learn Medicine without seeing patients is like not setting to sea at all”
- Seek joy in what you do, you will likely do this profession for the rest of your lives, if you enjoy Medicine, patients and those you work with will enjoy working with you
- Go out of your way to help patients, a glass of water, a warm blanket are sometimes worth more than the medications you prescribe or the tests you order
- Consider everyone involved in healthcare important and part of the team, from the cleaner to the porter, even the administrators and remember nurses are our sisters
- Live a full life, we see first hand how illness can affect health, death can end life and so enjoy life to its fullest, take care of your body, mind and soul
- Be grateful for being a doctor, and remember there is nothing more valuable to you than the prayers of your patients
