Ten Life-Changing Lessons from a Decade of Experience

Ten Life-Changing Lessons from a Decade of Experience

Ten years ago, at 26 years old, I found myself in a place of uncertainty, searching for direction. I was working as a personal trainer but knew I needed a career that offered stability, challenged me to grow, and allowed me to make a meaningful impact every day. What I didn’t realize then was that the path ahead of me?would not only shape my career but also transform my life in ways I could have never imagined.

Over the past decade, I’ve experienced tremendous growth, navigated both personal and professional transitions, and faced challenges that have shaped me into the woman I am today. This journey has been full of successes, unexpected detours, and invaluable lessons that have strengthened my beliefs and values.?

As I celebrate this milestone, I want to share ten key lessons that have defined my career and personal development. Whether you're just starting out or well into your journey, I hope these insights resonate with you and serve as a reminder that growth is a continuous process, shaped by both triumphs and challenges. As John C. Maxwell once said, "Change is inevitable. Growth is optional." The lessons we learn along the way are what shape us into stronger, wiser, and more effective leaders and individuals.

So, here they are—10 lessons learned in 10 years.

Trust the Process

Trusting the process doesn’t mean sitting back and waiting for success to come; it’s about embracing the journey, even when things feel uncertain. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow and refine your skills. The outcomes may not always be immediate, but every step is building toward something greater. In moments of doubt, remember that persistence, patience, and faith in the process will lead you to your goals.

Invest in your Growth and Development

Growth doesn’t happen by accident—it requires intentional investment. Whether through learning new skills, seeking feedback, or stepping out of your comfort zone, personal and professional development should be a lifelong commitment. Your career will only go as far as the effort you put into growing yourself. When you invest in your growth, you’re not just preparing for future opportunities, you’re shaping the leader you want to become.

People First, Always

The foundation of great leadership is the people you serve. When you prioritize the well-being and growth of others, you create a culture of loyalty, collaboration, and trust. People are at the heart of every successful team and organization. Put your team’s needs first, show empathy, and lead by example. When your people thrive, you will too.?

Operate with Excellence

Excellence is about more than just high-quality results; it’s a mindset. Striving for excellence means going the extra mile even when no one is watching. It means continuously raising your own standards, seeking improvement, and delivering the best you can, every time. Excellence is contagious, and when you model it, you inspire others to do the same.

Emotional Intelligence Matters

Understanding and managing your emotions, as well as empathizing with others, is key to personal and professional success. Emotional intelligence allows you to navigate relationships, communicate effectively, and remain calm under pressure. It’s a critical skill for unlocking deeper connections and keeping a perspective that allows you to respond rather than react.?

Sweat the small stuff

Small details matter more than we often realize. Taking the time to address the little things—whether it’s being punctual, keeping promises, or communicating clearly—builds a culture of trust and respect. These small actions compound over time, shaping your character and the quality of your work. Don’t overlook the small stuff; it’s often what makes the biggest difference in the long run.

Path over Pace

It’s easy to get caught up in the rush to achieve, but it’s the path we take that shapes us, not the speed at which we travel. Focus on building sustainable progress, rather than burning out by pushing too hard too fast. The right path ensures long-term success and fulfillment, while a rushed pace can lead to mistakes and missed opportunities. Take the time to build a solid foundation, and the results will follow

Feedback is a Gift

Feedback, when given and received with an open mind, is one of the most valuable tools for growth. It can be tough to hear, but it’s an opportunity to refine your skills, correct course, and improve your performance. Approach feedback not as criticism, but as a gift that helps you become the best version of yourself. Every bit of feedback, no matter how small, can push you toward greatness.

Establish Rhythms vs. Strive for “Balance”

Work-life balance is a myth—rhythms are what we need. Life and work are dynamic, and it’s more about finding a rhythm that allows you to thrive in both areas. Some seasons will require more focus on one side than the other, and that’s okay. By establishing routines that support your well-being, productivity, and goals, you can maintain harmony and avoid burnout.

Recharge and Refresh, Often

Success is not a sprint; it’s a marathon. To keep going, you need to recharge and refresh your mind and body regularly. Whether it’s a vacation, a hobby, or simply taking time to be still, rest is a key component of sustained success. Prioritize self-care and make time for what re-energizes you. Without regular recharging, burnout becomes inevitable.

These lessons are a testament to the power of growth, the importance of people, and the strength of resilience. As I reflect on the past decade, I realize that success isn’t about a single moment or achievement—it’s about the small, consistent steps taken along the way.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the journey never truly ends. There will always be more to learn, more ways to grow, and new challenges to overcome. But with the right mindset, strong relationships, and a commitment to excellence, the possibilities are endless.

Here’s to the next chapter!

Thanks for sharing! Stephanie B. congrats on 10 years! I really resonated with "rest is a key component of sustained success". It's something I struggle with and I'm constantly working on. Rest is sacred, and we must treat it as such, or we'll never be able to "go" the way we want to!
