Ten Lessons From My Two Decades of Professional Journey

Ten Lessons From My Two Decades of Professional Journey

Over the course of my two decades of hard-won experience, I have been very fortunate to lead numerous projects and teams, encompassing a wide range of domains, environments, cultures, geographies, and team dynamics. Through these experiences, I have garnered a wealth of valuable insights. In the interest of brevity, I have curated the initial ten insights to share with you in this article.

It is my sincere hope that these insights will resonate with and provide some value to you as well.

  1. In the world of corporations, everyone is replaceable. It doesn't matter if you're the CEO or a manager—everyone can be replaced. That's just how businesses are built—to last beyond individuals. But rather than seeing this as a threat, see it as a reason to stay grounded and keep growing. Pour your heart and effort into becoming the best you can be, and in bringing value to those around you. Because at the end of the day, what people will remember isn't your job title. It's the kind of person you were, how you made them feel, and how you helped them become better. Now, that's a legacy worth leaving.
  2. Value integrity above all. Place paramount importance on integrity. Not just in the corporate sphere, the pillars of trust and respect rest firmly on the bedrock of integrity. Endeavour to infuse honesty into every interaction, maintaining your ethical stance even in the face of extreme adversity. An unblemished reputation for ethical conduct isn't just a treasured asset, but a distinguishing attribute that will set you apart over the course of your career.
  3. Embrace continuous learning. Be a lifelong student. Keep your curiosity alive and fervently commit to broadening your knowledge, regardless of your position or age. In our fast-paced, competitive landscape, the sharpening of your skills is a strategic imperative, a driving force that keeps you and your business/enterprise at the forefront.
  4. Your personal growth and success are inextricably intertwined with that of your team. As a leader, your growth trajectory is directly proportional to the development and success of those you lead. It is by cultivating their skills, fostering their potential, and creating a supportive environment that they can thrive in, that you ultimately enhance your own abilities and expertise. The team's victories are your victories, and their growth paves the way for your own. It's a symbiotic relationship where mutual advancement is key. Remember, a rising tide lifts all boats.
  5. Hire individuals who are smarter than you. I know it is cliche. But this is too important even at the cost of over-emphasising. Recruiting individuals less competent than yourself will only foster mediocrity, consuming your valuable time, focus and energy. While hiring members for your team, seek out candidates who emanate vitality, possess clear vision, and exude a positively charged, 'can-do' spirit.
  6. Insecurity and laziness can stir up the whirlwind of office politics. People with these traits might do all they can to prove their worth and secure their roles. But remember, there's a different way. Seek out a team or manager known for their skills and ability. The truly competent don't get lost in politics. They put their energy into what really matters: creating value and making a difference. That's where real impact is made, and that's the kind of team you want to be part of.
  7. Find a Mentor. Securing a mentor at your workplace can significantly enhance your professional growth. Mentors provide valuable insights drawn from their wealth of experience, guide you through challenging scenarios, and offer constructive feedback to hone your skills. They can help you navigate the complexities of the corporate landscape, fostering your confidence and expediting your career progression. Furthermore, a mentor can help you expand your professional network, expose you to new perspectives, and inspire you towards continual learning and improvement. Thus, having a mentor is an invaluable resource in your professional journey.
  8. Preserving a healthy work-life balance is crucial. It's vital to understand that heightened productivity doesn't equate to extended work hours. Strive for a harmonious balance in your lifestyle to stave off exhaustion, safeguard your mental health, and uphold long-term efficiency. Promote a similar equilibrium within your team. Avoid the temptation to extend work hours unnecessarily for mere impression's sake unless it's utterly critical and urgent. With astute planning and sustained focus, you'll be astonished at what can be accomplished within a standard eight-hour workday.
  9. Open and honest communication lights the path to a trusting and transparent team. Avoid misunderstandings and let go of guesswork—they only slow us down and cause friction. Instead, let's be precise in what we say and timely in when we say it. But remember, speaking is just half the story. The other half? Listening—and not just hearing. True listening means giving your full attention, showing that you value others' ideas and thoughts. It's also our secret tool to uncover hidden insights and spot challenges before they grow. Together, powerful communication and deep listening create the magic that drives incredible teams and extraordinary leaders.
  10. Foster a spirit of resilience. Cultivate resilience like a precious seed. Our paths, whether in life or work, are a blend of sunshine and storm. When we meet hurdles along the way, let's greet them with grace, not as roadblocks but as stepping stones towards growth. By nurturing our resilience, we become adept at bouncing back from life's curveballs, keeping our spirits high even in the face of adversity. Resilience is our silent strength, helping us weather any storm and rise above the waves.

Remember that most of our career journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Every triumph, setback, lesson, and relationship along the way contributes to who you are as a professional and as a person.

As you move forward, may these insights serve as a compass to guide you, a beacon to light your path, and a reminder of the powerful impact you can have.

Keep growing, stay resilient, and never forget the strength of integrity and value of team growth. May your next two decades be even more insightful, rewarding, and successful. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and here's to many more milestones together.

Very well presented,Harish. Some of these are inherent but most can be acquired over a period of time, if one really wishes to. Success usually has many fathers and one must never forget to acknowledge, with humility, the invaluable contributions by all those well wishers.
