Remember your 2019 New Year’s intentions, resolutions or whatever you call it?
“New Year’s resolutions are usually the typical reminder of what we haven’t fallen through on our commitments from the year before” , said Michael Emery.
"The new year often inspires a renewed sense of purpose, determination, and hope. It’s a time when you put the past behind you and begin new adventures. A time to reexamine your life and figure out what changes you’d like to make.
Also, the end of the calendar year is often a time of reflection about our lives and our performance.
"To mark this transition, you typically come up with New Year’s resolutions. After spending the holidays indulging in mashed potatoes and candy canes and maintaining a non-stop schedule, you are determined to change your life for the better.
So, you buy a gym membership and commit to working out every day. You decide that you need to be less selfish, so you put the focus on strengthening your personal mental, emotional and spiritual being, and building a better relationship with your kids. You’ve been spending too much time on your electronic devices, so you start a digital detox. Plus, you need to start eating healthier, so you decide to cook all of your meals at home with fresh, organic ingredients. Feeling determined and proud of your new way of life, you spend January in the zone. You’re making healthy meals, working out regularly, helping others, and overall feeling invincible.
Then, BAM! Your workload increases ten-fold, you get into a major fight with your significant other, a friend gets a bad diagnosis, and you’re left barely holding it together, much less keeping up with your new way of life.
What was supposed to breathe new life into your routine is now just one more thing to do. You miss a workout, succumb to fast food at lunch one day, and decide you’ve failed so you abort your resolutions altogether and stop trying. You’re left feeling sad and guilty for not being able to keep up with your new way of life, and you vow to never make them again. Until next year", said Melissa Eisler.
Minimizing debts, starting your own business, getting that promotion, falling in love, improving a relationship or pursuing your mental-emotional-spiritual growth are all resolutions we shoot for. With all the demands from our busy day-to-day lives, it is easy to lose track of what we said we wanted the most.
We give up. We procrastinate. We feel guilty.
So what happened? Why does our resolve fade so quickly?
Maybe we weren't very clear with challenging goals and meaningful wants to begin with. If so, maybe we are a easy prey of the irrelevant, urgent "busyness" of daily live.
May I have your permission to coach you for a minute to gain more clarity?
- What are your deepest desires for 2020? What do you want? What do you need? How would you like to be and feel 1, 3, 6 months from now?
- WHY? Why do you want that? What is its purpose? How would it feel to have it?
- What skills, knowledge, or experience do you need to get there? Do you have a plan? How are you going to do it?
- How would your life transform if you were achieving your goals every day?
- What will it take to truly transform your life today?
- What are you willing to give up to get them?
- What keeps you from true change and reaching your goals?
- If you could rid yourself of doubts, insecurities, resistance and fear, don’t you think you would have done so already? What personality traits are sabotaging you? Which ones need improvement?
- What structure of support (and this is a huge one) will you need to ensure this new future?
- If you could choose THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO FOCUS ON, what it would be?
I promise that when you align your life this way, you won't have to worry about your resolutions or your goals. You'll get everything that your heart desires.
As you start 2020, know that I am wishing you a fantastic year. May all your dreams come true.
Have a successful 2020!
And remember...
