Ten discoveries! The results of the first "Electronic Components Shortage Survey" in 2021 are released

In order to deeply understand the impact of the "historical shortage" of electronic components on enterprises, analysts and editors of electronic enthusiasts have visited a number of enterprises and experts in the Pearl River Delta and made a series of reports. In order to further understand the truth about the shortage of goods in a comprehensive and in-depth manner and provide industry decision makers with real and reliable industry data, through online research, the "2021 electronic component shortage survey" was carried out for the upstream and downstream of the electronic supply chain. After ten days of promotion by millions of professional users, we have collected enough user data feedback and sorted out the results of the survey. As a neutral media, we disclosed the results of this survey to the industry for the first time, sorted out the top ten findings of this survey, and the three major countermeasures that the analysts came up with after analyzing the results of the survey.

1. Manufacturing companies actively participate in the research, and the sample of companies is effective

Among the samples in this survey, manufacturing companies accounted for the largest proportion, at 60.7%, and solution companies accounted for 15.6%. From chip design, distribution agency, e-commerce platform, etc. also account for a certain proportion. We believe that most of the samples taken in this survey are chip demand companies, as well as some component suppliers (original factories, distribution and e-commerce platforms). For the true validity of the results, there should be sufficient sampling.

Operational amplifier, optocoupler, Darlington, logic integrated circuit, PWM control integrated circuit, integrated circuit, MCU, etc.

2. The proportion of R&D and managers is high, and the frontline directly feeds back the truth of the industry

From the job position of the interviewees, R&D personnel accounted for 66.4%, management positions accounted for 12.3%, in addition to sales, procurement, marketing and other positions accounted for a certain proportion of respondents. R&D personnel and business managers are the most important user group of e-enthusiasts, and they are also the insiders who know the most about out-of-stock situations.

It can be seen from the above two data that this survey has received strong support and response from R&D engineers from terminal manufacturing companies and solution design companies, and it can basically reflect the current electronics manufacturing R&D personnel's front-line lack of electronic components. , Real feedback.

3. The interviewed companies cover all walks of life, and the shortage involves all walks of life

From the perspective of the industries that the respondents belong to, the distribution is relatively even, mainly consumer electronics accounted for 19.8%, industrial control accounted for 17.1%, household appliances/smart homes accounted for 14.3%, automotive electronics accounted for 11.9%, network communications accounted for 9.1%, and Networking accounted for 8.7%, and medical electronics accounted for 8.3%. This not only shows that the current component shortage situation has received widespread attention from various application industries, but also reflects that the shortage of goods covers a wider range of industries.

Table 3: The interviewed companies cover all industries in the electronics industry

Research shows that nearly 50% of companies have annual revenues below 50 million yuan, 11.5% of companies with annual revenues of between 50 million and 100 million yuan, and 12.3% of companies with annual revenues of between 100 million and 300 million yuan. This shows that SMEs are more concerned about the shortage of components, and the impact of the shortage on SMEs is also greater.

Fourth, MCU and power IC are most out of stock, and passive components that are often out of stock in previous years have little impact this time

In the survey on the types of currently out-of-stock components, the results show that the top five most out-of-stock components are MCU, power IC, CPU/processor SoC, power devices, and analog chips in order. In addition, sensors, memory chips, GPUs, wireless connection chips, etc. also account for a certain proportion.

However, MLCC, PCB, etc., which were relatively lacking in the shortage of goods in the previous two years, did not show a particularly prominent shortage of goods this year.

5. Out of stock has existed since last year, but it will break out in 2021

As for the current component delays, 41.3% have a delivery period of more than 2 months, 24.6% have a delivery period of more than 4 months, and 21.7% have a delivery period of more than half a year. In addition, there are 8% have a delivery period of more than 1 year.

Generally speaking, the normal delivery period for MCUs, power ICs, power devices, etc. is 8 weeks. Obviously, from the survey, the current delivery period has become a common phenomenon, and the delivery period exceeds 4 months and half a year has exceeded 45%. proportion. It can be seen that the situation of the entire delivery period is very severe.

Many companies have reported that they have been out of stock for half a year or even more than a year, but the slow response of the supply chain this time is related to the continued epidemic, and it must also be related to de-intermediation in recent years.

6. The shortage of original factories in the United States and Taiwan of China accounted for more than 50% of the ratio, and the situation is not good.

Regarding which regions have the greatest impact on the supply chain, the results show that the United States is the most, followed by Taiwan, followed by Japan, China, and Europe. All of the above are more than 10%. Among them, the United States accounted for 39.3%, far higher than the second-ranked Taiwan, which accounted for 16.6%. The proportions of South Korea and Southeast Asia are relatively small.

7. The continuous increase in orders and shortages coexist at the same time, and the situation is grim

For the loss caused by the shortage of electronic components, the most direct one is "the increase in orders but the failure to deliver the goods", accounting for 37.9%, indicating that many manufacturers are in a position of waiting for the rice; choose "higher price, but affordable "Accounting for 26.6%, indicating that some manufacturers are under the pressure of component price increases; "The price is too high, and can not afford" options accounted for 18.3%. It is worth noting that up to 15.4% of the total chose "decrease in orders and under-start". It can also be seen that due to factors such as core shortage, some manufacturers cannot get more orders.

8. Finding alternative materials and new suppliers is the short-term primary action, and redesigning the plan is the medium-term plan

Faced with the situation of shortage of stocks and price increases, the way to find alternative materials accounted for 39.2%, followed by finding more suppliers, accounting for 24.2%, and redesigning solutions reached 21.2%. This is the three major countermeasures for manufacturers to face shortages. In addition, high-priced spot purchases as a necessary measure ranked fourth. Perhaps the worst thing is shrinking layoffs and strategic defense. This option also accounts for 2.7%. According to research, there are no companies that have closed their doors due to shortages.

Out-of-stock companies are looking for alternative materials and more suppliers in the short term, which is a good market opportunity for domestic ICs. The reshuffle of the market is inevitable. At present, the redesign plan is a medium-term response strategy, and there has not yet been a company that has laid off employees. As the shortage continues, we will continue to pay attention to the development of the industry.

9. The top three reasons for shortages are global, and it is difficult for Chinese companies to deal with them individually

Regarding the cause of the out-of-stock outbreak, from the survey data, the biggest reason is still the impact of the epidemic, accounting for 25.5%; insufficient production capacity and shortage of materials are also very important factors. The first three causes are global events and cannot be resolved in the short term by China alone.

In addition, the outbreak of domestic demand, including the increase in demand for 5G and new energy vehicles is also one of the causes.

In addition, man-made hoarding and strategic adjustments of chip manufacturers have also exacerbated this concentrated outbreak of shortages to some extent.

10. The shortage of goods is pessimistic, and it is unlikely to be resolved in the first half of 2021.

When asked when the shortage situation will be relieved, it is believed that the relief time node will only account for 6.6% in the first half of 2021. The industry has generally pessimistic views on solving the shortage crisis in the near future.

The vast majority of people believe that the time point will be in the third quarter of 2021 and beyond, and that the proportion will exceed 45% from the third quarter of 2021 to the end of the year, and 20.5% of the respondents chose 2022.

According to the overall forecast, the shortage of goods will continue in the first half of 2021. The third quarter began to ease, but the situation may become clear until 2022.

The previous view was verified again: this is a historical shortage and it is difficult to resolve quickly.
