The Ten C's to Rock Your Social Media Engagement

Master these points for your social media?success?

Thank you for taking the time to read this article. It is part of my newsletter series, Take Back Mondays, where I help people love Mondays again. It has been twenty years since I entered the workforce, over which time I have worked both in larger SaaS companies and run a digital boutique agency. I have managed hundreds of people, both in-house and remotely, from multiple nationalities, ages, cultures, and languages. Today I work as a business coach to help people turn their skills and passions into online businesses. If you like this article, please consider subscribing!

Do you want to succeed on social media? If you are online for business, then I know the answer is ‘Yes’. Success means more followers, more inquiries, more authority, and ultimately more sales. Best of all: social media is free!?

If you are ready to increase your success, keep reading.

1/ Clarity

When I visit your profile, I need to know what you are about. If there are too many titles, a lack of a background banner, or vague language, you will get fewer people engaging with you. You must build a personal brand . Ask yourself a couple of questions: 1. What are the three descriptive words you want others to think of when they discover your profile? 2. What is the one high-demand skill you want to be known as an expert in (note: if you aren’t already selling anything related to that, this is a problem!)? 3. What is your main media channel people who discover you can tune into weekly (blog, YouTube, newsletter, podcast)? 4. What is your one big giveaway, freebie, or lead magnet you offer to get people into your email funnels? Clarity is the secret to building a strong brand.

2/ Commitment

Commit to being consistent. This means deciding what, where, how often, and when you will post and engage on social media. How often you show up really depends on you but the more frequently, the better. Do what feels manageable. Under commitment, I count the following activities: producing content, distributing it via social media, your website, online publications, email, and more, engaging with others via your content, and engaging on others’ posts. I highly recommend mapping out your detailed content strategy. I do this in my membership, From Follower to Leader .?

3/ Creative Content

People don’t want to see ‘copy and paste’ posts. Some people mistakenly say ‘as long as I post something, it is good.’ Wrong. The quality of what you post is even more important than the quantity. ‘Just keep posting’ is bad advice. Instead, focus on developing an amazing content strategy with well-prepared posts that will grow your following fast. Think about developing variety so your posts never bore your audience. Learn how to produce content people can’t wait to consume! If you need some advice on producing great content, check out my video playlist here.

4/ Charisma

Look no further than your own social media feeds to see who has the most attention. I can bet that the people who really stand out have strong personalities. The best profiles convey positive energy and this is what attracts others. Let your charisma shine through your content! Your personal style can also contribute positively to building a brand that stands out and is memorable.?Check your energy levels and make sure to show up with passion and soul online...people notice!

5/ Copy

You won’t get very far on social media without great copy. Even video channels need compelling titles, subtitles, descriptions, and scripts. Learn how to write the perfect post and to master storytelling. Keywords matter too! Invest in at least one copywriting course or book to learn the basics. Follow people online who write amazing copy to inspire you and learn from them. Invest in a basic SEO tool. Avoid these typical copywriting mistakes if you want to keep strong engagement.?

6/ Content Batching

Producing content on the fly usually backfires. Either you lose consistency because life happens, and you can’t get it done. Or the quality is mediocre. I swear by content batch pre-production. I know my content will be twice as good if it has been carefully planned, developed, and scheduled. Plus, this takes the stress out of social media! I teach this in my membership and my workshop . You should plan out your content one entire month in advance. This will remove all stress from social media, plus the results will be twice as good as if you just try to wing it.

7/ Comments?

There are two important aspects of comments.

a) Comments on Other Posts: Leave thoughtful comments on others’ posts who are leaders in your industry, or on posts that are talking about topics you want to be best known as an expert in. Leaving random comments on random posts is not going to help your brand in any way, and in some cases, may even hurt your brand. Leaving comments is especially important to growing your brand, so if you have under 100,000 followers, you can’t skip this.

b)Comments on Your Own Posts: Always reply to the comments people leave on your content! Do this religiously and in a timely manner! This is the best way to turn visitors into followers and maybe even fans. I also categorize the likes on my posts and take action to connect further with certain people.?

8/ Covers

You can have the most amazing content, but if you neglect the cover, no one will click on it. Depending on which platform you are on, the cover may be different but generally, I am referring to the accompanying graphics and images with your main content. On YouTube, this would be a thumbnail. On Amazon, this would be your book cover. On Medium, this would be the main article image. On a product, this would be your packaging. Covers matter a lot. Hire a graphic designer or invest time and effort in finding or producing amazing imagery. One tip I have is to keep a folder with screenshots of great graphics you discover on social media to inspire you. If it caught your eye, it probably is doing the same for others. Sometimes you can even reach out to the owner to inquire who their designer is.

9/ Community

Community plays a huge role in social media success. Publishing content and running won’t get you very far. If you want to build a reputation and become popular, you need to network. There are a couple of types of communities I’d pay attention to:

a) Industry Communities. These are communities built by others where you believe your target audience is. Look for larger communities run by experts doing similar things as you, as well as other experts who have a different specialty but serve similar people. Join and participate. Bonus points: get to know the community owners. Who knows? There may be collaboration opportunities down the road, especially if you share generously your knowledge inside their community without poaching or pitching.?

b)Build Your Own Community. This one is harder but so rewarding! When people engage on your content, you have a place to tell them to go to stay in touch. Over time and with consistency, your community could become a massive funnel for your brand. The best part about building a community is that you own it so you can fill it with high value.

c) Your Network. I work really hard to curate my following, and you should too. Aim for quality over quantity. Define first whom you want in your network, and then be proactive in finding and connecting with them. I have some tips to build the right following .?

d) Virtual and Live Events. What a powerful drive for engagement! Even if you are an introvert, trust me when I say the benefits are too good to pass up. Please research and book a couple of events per year. You won’t regret it. Need some networking tips? I’ve got you covered here .?

10/ Call-To-Action?

Your content should finish strong by telling your audience what you’d like them to do next. Ask them a question. Refer them to related content. Invite them to a workshop. Offer them a freebie related to the content. Give them the link to subscribe, or remind them to do it on-page. This is a common mistake I see entrepreneurs and creators making to forget to include a CTA. Remember that you can never assume the people seeing your content already know and follow you. This is your opportunity to get them to stick around. Don’t miss it! One last thing: Don’t be vague (“Reach out/DM me/visit my website”) or overwhelm people with a long list of links. Lastly, if someone engaged on your content via a comment, you can also send them a private message to invite them to connect further (follow you, hop on a call, or even meet for a coffee).

Gotta love those C words. I have never had any success with Calls To Action. I sure as Hell wouldn't end a post with "Agree?". That is the cheapest way to receive engagement and some who share the "Agree?" posts have been removed for creating an unnecessary echo chamber. If their sense of humor is not aligned with yours there is nothing more to say.
