Ten Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now by Jaron Lanier

It is ironic to publish a review about the book “Ten Arguments For Deleting Your Social Media Account Right Now” by Jaron Lanier on a social media network he advises you to delete your account on...

I discovered Lanier while browsing TED Talks and got fascinated by him when I stumbled on one of his talks. I purchased this book as I think the business model by the big social media companies is not sustainable. It was a quick and interesting read!

I personally understood the business model of these networks very early on and therefore know what risks are involved in using them “for free”! Therefore I post on these networks with a very clear cut strategy and intention!

I personally understood the business model of these networks very early on and therefore know what risks are involved in using them “for free”! Therefore I post on these networks with a very clear cut strategy and intention! On my business accounts I just post commercial things and on my private accounts I post only two things: I share knowledge & things I am very passionate about, without any commercial purpose. Always positive and never putting others down. So, I really dislike the BUMMER Machine! I don’t think I am hooked or addicted to social media. I often go offline several times a year and even take additional “social media diets” while staying online.

I highly recommend you to read the book if:

A. You don’t know how social networks make so much money,

B. You don’t have a clear strategy what to post and what not to post on your social networks, or

C. Have a bad feeling everything you log-in on one of your social media accounts and/or feel it is becoming or already is an addiction.

I am not going to delete my accounts, because I think that my commercial strategy pays off more than what the networks yield off me (read: my data & privacy). And, for my private accounts I don’t have any commercial gains, but I hope that people get inspired & educated by my content and it outweighs me sacrificing my personal data & privacy.

Strangely enough Lanier is not that critical about LinkedIn (Microsoft’s subsidiary)... Later on in the book he disclosed that he works with/for Microsoft, so that might taint his point of view?!

Decide for yourself and do what’s good for you. What is important, read this book before you continu so many (very) personal and intimate I for about yourself and your loved ones (especially your kids!!).

Final reminder: remember that whatever you post on social media will never ever disappear again! So, think not once, but twice what you post online!!

As I decided to be less of a hoarder, I am not keeping books anymore (and my bookshelves are overflowing) I am giving away every book I finish to read. Therefore, the first to respond can pick it up in Amsterdam-Zuid for free.
