Temple University has announced the appointment of S. Suresh Madhavan as the new dean of its School of Pharmacy, as confirmed by Provost Gregory N. Mandel. Pending approval from the Board of Trustees, Madhavan will assume his new position as Dean on March 1, 2024. Madhavan transitioned to Temple University after a notable tenure as dean of the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) System College of Pharmacy in Fort Worth, Texas, from June 2019 to September 2023, where he continues as a professor of pharmacotherapy.
Provost Mandel expressed enthusiasm over Madhavan's appointment, citing his extensive experience and achievements in areas crucial to Temple's mission, including student retention, strategic planning, research, community engagement, and faculty recruitment. Madhavan's career spans over three decades, beginning at West Virginia University (WVU) in 1988, where he served in various capacities, notably as the chairperson of the Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy from 1994 until 2019.
Madhavan expressed his excitement and honor in taking up the dean's role at Temple University, acknowledging the institution's prestigious history in pharmacy education and its commitment to community engagement and health outcomes. He looks forward to collaborating with Temple's leadership and community in furthering the school's mission.
During his time at WVU, Madhavan focused on healthcare access, cost, and quality, securing over $35 million in funding for research and initiatives to address health disparities in West Virginia. Notably, he was pivotal in establishing the Rational Drug Therapy Program, a unique college-run prior authorization call center for state healthcare programs.
At UNTHSC, Madhavan spearheaded significant growth despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the launch of new online programs and a dual-degree option, alongside a substantial increase in research funding.

A prolific researcher, Madhavan has over 110 peer-reviewed publications and has received several prestigious awards, including the 2018 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Paul R. Dawson Award and the 2021 Research Achievement Award from the American Pharmacists Association. Purdue University honored him as an "Old Master" in 2022, recognizing his outstanding achievements.
Madhavan holds a Ph.D. in pharmacy administration from Purdue University, an MBA from the University of Poona, India, and a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Bombay, India, underscoring his diverse and extensive academic background.
