The Tempest

The Tempest

Art in the making. We’re shooting right now in beautiful Bergen for the closing event June 9th in the Grieg Hall. Shakespeare’s The Tempest, music by Arne Nordheim, video artist Sarah Derendinger creates magical sceneries.

Already known in Bergen for the successful Grieg-inspired production, Waiting, video artist Sarah Derendinger unfolds images of magical power in this poetic concert. Arne Nordheim’s large scale ballet suite, The Tempest, not only provides huge scope for narrative elements but positively requires them. Consequently, rather than illustrating Nordheim’s music, Sarah’s virtuosic video clip, displayed above the orchestra on five screens, follows a personal narration inspired by Shakespeare’s drama.

Miranda, Prospero’s daughter, is the protagonist. After a sheltered and entirely isolated childhood, she discovers desire, sexuality and freedom. In her zest for life, she oversteps boundaries, experiencing love and encountering death, both for the first time. Her companion on this journey into the self is Caliban, who embodies everything that was previously forbidden to Miranda.

Prospero’s power seems almost like an unbridled force of nature, fettering the two youngsters and preventing their union. Whilst Caliban ultimately succumbs to this power, Miranda has the potential and inner strength to free herself from her despair and non-life and follow her own path. Last but not least, in their loneliness, their longing for existential experiences and the sheer insurmountable opposition they face, Miranda and Caliban seem to reflect the present time, for the young people of today are suffering terribly from isolation and from the impossibility of gaining the experiences so crucial to their development.

The two actors on screen are Vilja Tjemsland Kwasny and Max Makowski from Carte Blanche. On stage their alter egos soprano Mari Eriksmoen and baritone Johannes Weisser. Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Edward Gardner. The music starts with an electronic soundtrack while the audience find their seats, just as the composer, who would have been 90 years old this year, intended.

This version of The Tempest will be broadcast on NRK on 20 June.

?If there is anything that characterises Arne Nordheim’s music, it must be the combination of timbral fantasy, masterful musical timing and an underlying dark and agonising longing. It is only when playfulness is let loose that things can really become serious. So also in The Tempest.? (Erling E. Guldbrandsen)

Thanks a million for great field work by M12 Gruppen/Eirik J?rstad & co in Bergen.
