Temperature Grade of SFP Transceivers

There are three temperature grades of SFP transceivers: commercial, extended, and industrial.

Commercial-Grade(COM): 0 - 70°C

Extended-Grade(EXT): -20 - 85°C

Industrial-Grade(IND): -40 - 85°C

Applications

Commercial-grade: enterprise and data center, indoor

Industrial-Grade: industrial Ethernet, 5G front-haul, outdoor

The Effect of Temperature on Optical Modules

High temperature: the optical power of SFP transceivers will increase, and there will be errors in the received signal. In severe cases, the optical module will even be damaged, resulting in the optical module not working perfectly.

Low temperature: The optical communication system generates heat during operation, so it is rare to see that the operating temperature of the optical module is too low. If the working temperature is too low, the performance of the optical module will be unstable.

Causes of Abnormal Temperature of The Optical Module

Bad quality optical module: Inferior materials and poor built-in design lead to poor heat dissipation and abnormal temperature.

Extreme working conditions: The harsh working environment will change the temperature of the optical module, thus affecting optical power and optical sensitivity.

Used optical transceiver: Due to the loss of internal components, second-hand optical modules cannot meet the temperature standards of new modules, so they are more likely to fail to work perfectly.

How to Deal with Optical Modules with Abnormal Temperature

When the operating temperature of the optical module exceeds the range, the port indicator turns red, and we should replace the optical module at this time.?

The polling period of the optical module is 5 minutes. Therefore, after replacing the optical module, we need to wait 5 minutes before observing whether the port indicator returns to normal. If the port red light is off, the optical module has returned to normal.
