Temperature Drop Across AC Coils

We are in the dog days of summer and I am constantly asked to check air conditioning units to see if they are functioning properly.  Although I always recommend using professionals to do thorough analysis / trouble shooting, the average home owner can determine if their AC unit is functioning by measuring the temperature drop before and after the coils via temperature gauges or .... a typical laser thermometer... the temperature of the duct will closely reflect the temperature of the air traveling through it.... temperature difference should be in the magnitude of 14 to 22 degrees Fahrenheit.
