Tell Me Why

Tell Me Why

In a world where rapid information exchange is the norm, it's rare for me to delve into matters of great societal importance. Yet, some issues are too critical to overlook, particularly when they reflect on the intentions and priorities of those in governance. A perplexing and deeply concerning dichotomy exists in our society: the swiftness with which our government moves to ban books juxtaposed against its reluctance to address the issue of rapid-fire assault weapons.

The Incongruity of Censorship and Lethality

Consider this: why does our government exhibit swiftness in censoring literature, erasing pieces of history and knowledge, yet remain seemingly impervious to the urgent need to regulate weapons that have repeatedly wreaked havoc in our communities? This question is not just rhetorical; it underpins a deeper societal malaise.

The Paradox of Being Pro-Life and Pro-Gun

The dichotomy extends to the personal beliefs held by many. How does one reconcile being pro-life with being pro-gun? The essence of being pro-life, as it is commonly understood, should inherently encompass all forms of life preservation, not selectively so. Yet, the narrative often diverges when it comes to gun ownership and control.

Erasure of History vs. Preservation of Life

The banning of books is a symbolic act of erasing history. It's a truism that those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. If we are to progress as a society, we must confront our past, learn from it, and evolve. Books are conduits of this historical wisdom, not instruments of death. The stark contrast with the ongoing tragedy of lives lost to gun violence cannot be overstated. It's an irony bordering on the tragic that while we hear of no fatalities caused by books, the same cannot be said for assault weapons.

Political Rhetoric vs. Action

The response to gun violence often follows a predictable, yet frustrating pattern. There's an outpouring of 'thoughts and prayers,' a phrase that has become synonymous with inaction. The call for gun reform, which should be a pragmatic and immediate response, is often dismissed as politicizing tragedy. This leads us to question the intent behind these actions and inactions.

Intent: The Core of the Issue

The central question then becomes: what is the intent behind these disparate approaches? Is it a matter of political convenience, ideological rigidity, or a deeper, more systemic reluctance to confront challenging issues? The intent, or lack thereof, behind these decisions reveals much about our society's priorities and the values we uphold.

This discourse isn't merely about contrasting policies; it's about examining the underlying values and intentions that shape our society. It's about understanding the paradoxes that define our times and striving for coherence in our collective moral and ethical stance.

Reflective Queries

  • Can societal progress truly occur without confronting uncomfortable truths in our history?
  • Is the preservation of life not the ultimate pro-life stance?
  • When will 'thoughts and prayers' transform into decisive action?

Insightful and courageous post, William Rochelle! A testament that values, virtue, character, and purpose matter in leadership and choosing who is to be our leaders matter - something many have taken for granted until recent historical events. What may appear as a paradox on the surface - progun versus pro-life and book-banning and other paradoxes - are only that: The surface. Behaviors and the lack thereof that you point out are the signposts to the true underlying values: Those leaders you point out have the narcissistic value of power and a position of authority over the more altruistic values of service to the common good and leadership that stems from virtue and a courageous character. That is what these leaders truly value based on the behavioral evidence. That's why the surface values seem to be reeds blowing in the wind that creates the surface level paradox. We have been blessed in this country with the right to choose our leaders. Choose wisely. Choose character. Choose those with true altruistic values and purpose. Choose those with clarity, transparency, and courage.

Our Governance has ignored many things of importance not just the issues laid out in the article. Like our lack of border control and not knowing who is coming into our country to harm us with likely worse than guns. It is a sad time in America when the rules don't apply to everyone equally, likely more rules wouldn't matter unless there is equal enforcement. Continuing to support other countries when we do not take of our own is likely our downfall. I pray that changes occur and quickly.
