Hiring Manager: Nice meeting you, thanks for coming. Tell me what do you know about our company?
Candidate: ……….mmmm…….well……(Crash and burn!)
One of the biggest mistakes made by job seekers is to arrive to the interview with no preparation. If you do not do any research into the company, you applied for, you won’t be able to explain accurately to the hiring manager…”Why do you want to work here?...Why are you a fit for our company?. ..and other HR questions.
“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” ~Benjamin Franklin
You must research about the company, you must do it, otherwise, why are you interviewing?
You must understand the business and the goals of the company. You want to come across as someone who is committed to the company, and will be an asset to the team, believe me they will be impressed, not every job seeker does a good job researching the company, just the small sniped sent by the recruiter or the little they read on the job description.
As soon as you landed the phone or in person interview, begin your research on the company. Then you must ask yourself, do I want to work there? You want to know everything you can about the company, but also the role you just applied for.
This is the best way to demonstrate the hiring manager you understand the business and that you are the best candidate for the position. Also the research will prepare you for some of the questions from the hiring manager.
By visiting the company’s web page and understanding what they do, company’s history, mission statement, products/services offered, and much more, you will secure an advantage on the interview. And if you want to go the extra mile, assuming you really want that job, you can also want to visit the websites of their competitors. That would be a great question for the manager, what makes you guys better that XYZ company?
The more prepared you are, the better your interview will go. You will feel secure on your answers, and confidence is one of the best ways to prove you are the perfect candidate for the role!
