Telex vs. Express BL: Key Differences and Functions

Telex vs. Express BL: Key Differences and Functions

The terms Telex Bill of Lading (Telex BL) and Express Bill of Lading (Express BL) refer to different methods of releasing consignment. Here are the main differences between the two:

Telex Bill of Lading (Telex BL)

  • Definition: A Telex BL is an electronic message sent by the shipping line or its agent, informing the destination port that the original BL has been surrendered at the port of origin.
  • Procedure: The shipper surrenders the original BL to the carrier at the port of origin. The carrier then sends a telex message to the destination port to release the cargo to the consignee without presenting the original BL.
  • Document Requirement: Requires the surrender of the original BL at the port of origin.
  • Cost: May involve fees for the telex release.

Express Bill of Lading (Express BL)

  • Definition: An Express BL, also known as a Sea Waybill, is a non-negotiable document that allows the cargo to be released to the named consignee without presenting the original BL.
  • Procedure: The shipping line issues the Express BL and sends it directly to the consignee, allowing for the immediate release of the cargo upon arrival.
  • Document Requirement: Does not require the surrender of the original BL.
  • Cost: Typically has lower costs compared to the Telex BL.

In summary, the primary difference lies in the procedure and document requirements. A Telex BL requires the surrender of the original document(BL) at the origin, whereas an Express BL allows for immediate release without the need for the original document (BL). Both methods aim to streamline the process of releasing cargo at the destination port.

it must be caution to use Express Bill of Loading, unless you get full payment before shipment.
