Telework and the local economy

Telework may be helping rural economic growth, and SHOW-UP act may have unintended consequences.

A pre-pandemic?study?on telework and local income shows we should be investigating how telework has benefited non-urban economies. This study found that working from home is positively related to increased median household income. The nature of work was changing for decades before the pandemic; and COVID-19 remote work policies accelerated an existing trend from centralized work locations to a decentralized, home-based structure.

An article from the Rural Broadband?Association?indicates that the ability to telework may be generating economic growth in rural spaces.?Pew?Research reports that nearly 60% of employed adults have jobs that can be “teleworked.” Rural telework can be expected to increase, and investment in rural internet service could pave the way to attract teleworkers.

Congress should leave federal pandemic teleworking policies in place and invest in research funding on non-urban economic impact. My exploration of telework found Australia is active in telework research; and I believe the U.S. would benefit from leveraging their results to study domestic telework economic impact. One of the most interesting concepts I found is that telework policies and investment are an attractive alternative community economic development approach.

Kevin Cevasco MPH MBA nice article. I recall I read an article during the pandemic about teleworking/commuting and the author suggested that middle management is bloated and that upper mgmt will see this during this period and cut out some of the fat. It didn't happen, I was told through former associates that middle mgmt focused on useless reports to keep their gigs. In time many of the cutting edge companies will be more flexible so the worker can be remote and work the hours they want.

Our team is operating in a hybrid mode post pandemic and the team seems to prefer it. Believe it is here to stay. Hopeful that the flexibility will translate to sustained productivity and loyalty.
