Telehandler Forklift Safety: And The Practices That Get Overlooked.

Telehandler forklifts, also known as telescopic handlers, shooting booms, Lulls, and probably a few names I’m not familiar with, are versatile machines used in construction, agriculture, and many industrial applications. Their unique design, combining the functionality of a forklift and a crane, makes them indispensable for lifting and moving heavy loads. However, their versatility comes with inherent risks, making safety an obvious concern. Here are a few guidelines to ensure safe telehandler forklift operation.

1. Proper Training and Certification Need I say more :)

Operators must undergo training and obtain certification before using a telehandler. Training programs should cover equipment operation, load handling, safety procedures, and emergency response. Continuous education and refresher courses are vital to keep operators updated on best practices and new safety standards. Also to not overlook the need to familiarize operators with new styles of machines, machine control layout and operation.?

2. Pre-Operational Checks

Before each use, conduct a thorough inspection of the telehandler. Check for any signs of wear and tear, fluid leaks, tire condition, and the functionality of safety devices such as lights, alarms, and seatbelts. Ensure that the load capacity chart is visible and legible. I like to highlight to my students they are looking for anything that is “Apparently Wrong” since most operators are not mechanics.?

3. Load Management

Proper load management is critical to prevent accidents. Always adhere to the manufacturer's load capacity limits. Use appropriate attachments and ensure loads are secure and evenly distributed. Avoid lifting loads higher than necessary and be cautious of overhead obstructions. One of the biggest issues with lifting safety is a lack of understanding the cantilever effect and load balance issues. Like they taught us in hunters safety course, Know Your Target and What Is Beyond. It's not just about moving and placing the load but also how those actions affect the substrate and load bearing capacity of where the load is being transferred to.

4. Safe Operation Practices

Operators should always wear seatbelts and use other personal protective equipment (PPE) as required. Maintain a safe speed, especially when turning or operating on uneven terrain. Be mindful of ground conditions.. Yes, you can swamp a telehandler in the mud! Avoid operating on slopes or unstable surfaces. Use stabilizers when necessary to enhance stability.

5. Awareness of Surroundings

Constantly monitor the surroundings for potential hazards, including pedestrians, other vehicles, and obstacles. Use spotters when operating in congested areas or when visibility is limited. Communicate clearly with team members using standard hand signals or communication devices and loud yelling. Got ya :) !!

6. Emergency Preparedness

Be prepared for emergencies by knowing the location of emergency exits, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. Operators should be trained in basic first aid and emergency response procedures. Know and review the safety plan in the event of an emergency, even if the plan is to call 911 first. Make sure the team knows what to do first.

By adhering to these safety guidelines, telehandler forklift operators can minimize risks and ensure a safe working environment. Safety is a collective responsibility, and consistent adherence to best practices is essential for preventing accidents and injuries.?

The key point is to always remember it’s your head on the pillow at night. When you're hurt everyone else goes home and moves on with life, except the hurt one…

Be safe and stay positive and of course have some fun too!
