1.???? Don't expect 5G-Advanced to fuel a RAN resurgence
5G-Advanced won't do much to advance the state of the ailing RAN market, Dell'Oro Group warned. Dell’Oro Group’s Radio access network (RAN) maven analyst Stefan Pongratz said that network upgrades to 5G-Advanced will not cause a major RAN revival. Even though the move to 5G-Advanced will require some global operators to upgrade to a true 5G core, rather than the 4G-based non-standalone (NSA) core some 5G networks still run, it will not require a wholesale update of the existing 5G RAN infrastructure.

2.???? AT&T's spending to hit six-year high as it ramps Ericsson 'open RAN'
AT&T didn't lie when it said it would reduce its exposure to vendor financing, a curious practice whereby a telco supplier loans money for the rollout of its own products. In the first quarter of 2023, vendor financing accounted for nearly a third of the $6.4 billion AT&T poured into capital investment, or $2.1 billion. But the contribution shrank to $1.6 billion in the subsequent three-month period and had dwindled to just $600 million in the recent second quarter, the operator's latest results show. Unfortunately for vendors, AT&T has not made up the difference.

3.???? Worldwide Spending on Public Cloud Services is Forecast to Double Between 2024 and 2028: IDC

Although annual spending growth is expected to slow slightly over the 2024-2028 forecast period, the market is forecast to achieve a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.4%.

7.???? Europe's inaction on Huawei may have come at the worst 5G time
As China's invasion fleet charges into the seas of the Taiwan Strait, and the US is sucked into its long-dreaded Asian conflict, NATO comes under immediate pressure to lend support. China moves preemptively, ordering Huawei, its biggest 5G kit vendor, to activate sleeper bugs implanted deep within basestation software still used by networks in Germany and other NATO countries. A devastating communications blackout follows, taking millions of Europeans and critical systems instantly offline.

8.???? Clamping down on scam calls from abroad
A common tactic used by criminals to defraud victims is to imitate - or ‘spoof’- phone numbers from a trusted person, organisation, or Government department, so their calls are more likely to be answered. Fraudsters based abroad often spoof UK numbers, knowing people are more likely to pick up these calls than if an unknown international number is displayed. Following a consultation, we are further strengthening our guidance in this area. Phone companies will now have to identify and block calls from abroad which falsely display a UK telephone number as a ‘Presentation Number’, except in a limited number of legitimate cases.

14.? Private 5G takes the gold in the Paris Olympics
In the late 18th Century, the ?Paris Catacombs?were used to move the contents of older cemeteries 20 meters underground without disturbing City of Light's living denizens. Similarly, Parisiennes today are largely oblivious to the private networks filling the air above the city to serve the needs of broadcasters for the summer Olympics of 2024. TV broadcasters in Paris and beyond are using private 5G networks in a box, which combine a radio access network (RAN) with a 5G mobile core in a moveable case.

15.? Measuring the cost of the CrowdStrike outage
There are a few different ways to size up the outage’s financial impact. The first, and probably most straightforward, is to look at CrowdStrike’s stock. As Futuriom’s?Scott Raynovich?noted, the value of CrowdStrike's shares fell dramatically in the wake of the incident. Raynovich put the lost value at 50%, but by Fierce's calculations the share price fell just over 30% from $377.37 on July 15 to $263.91 on July 22. ?
