1.???? Ericsson’s new fed group sets its sights on DoD biz

Ericsson is busy preparing a new subsidiary dedicated to working with U.S. state and federal government agencies. The entity, Ericsson Federal Technologies Group (EFTG), will be headed by Christopher Ling, who joins the firm as CEO.?Ling spent nearly 30 years with military contractor Booz Allen Hamilton, where he most recently headed its U.S. national security business.

2.???? FCC rule against broadband digital discrimination goes into effect

The 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law required the FCC to adopt rules to prevent and eliminate digital discrimination in regard to access to broadband, and?those rules?went into effect on March 22. According to the FCC, the rules will “help to ameliorate a digital divide that has underpinnings in the country's historical segregation and redlining practices in housing.”

Japanese telco KDDI has unveiled several acquisitions aimed at enhancing its position in the generative AI (GenAI) realm, as well as to advance its digital services portfolio. The operator released separate statements (in Japanese) to announce the moves, with the first one involving the formation of a “capital and business alliance” with Japanese AI startup Elyza.

6.???? Nvidia’s robotic Project GROOT pairs Apptronik humanoid with gen AI

Nvidia GTC2024 was alive with an expo hall full of vendors in the San Jose Convention Center offering variations on AI, including robots of the humanoid variety, including one version being piloted for use as a warehouse assistant at a Mercedes-Benz factory. Apptronik, based in Austin, Texas, showed off a 160-pound, 5-foot-8 ?humanoid called Apollo that Mercedes-Benz is piloting for factory work bringing parts to the production line for workers to assemble, while also inspecting the components at a factory in Hungary, according to an official at GTC.? Apollo stood at the edge of Nvidia’s large booth in the expo hall, alongside another humanoid called Digit from Agility Robotics.

8.???? 5G uptake pales in comparison to 4G's initial growth in India

5G traffic contribution to the entire data traffic in India has increased from 1.7% in 2022 to 14.8% in 2023, according to the recent release of Nokia's Mobile Broadband Index (MBiT) report for 2023.?The top two Indian telcos, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, launched commercial 5G services in October 2022. In metro areas, 5G's contribution to overall data traffic surged to 20%, followed by 17% in Category A circles (service areas), 12% in Category B circles, and 14% in Category C circles.

9.???? Verizon: Smart mobile robots need 5G

Verizon highlighted the use of 5G connectivity — over Wi-Fi —?for the autonomous mobile robots that it is starting to roll along the factory floor. “Cellular technology is really good at mobile devices. Wi-Fi is not. Wi-Fi doesn’t innately hand over between access points,” said Bill Stafford,?associate director of robotics in the emerging technology solutions group at Verizon,?during a demonstration of robotics at Verizon’s 5G day in Basking Ridge, N.J. last Thursday. He was highlighting one of the main reasons why an autonomous mobile robot might need a 5G connection over a private network to handle tasks reliably.

10.? AT&T debuts Internet Air for Business nationwide

AT&T’s foray into fixed wireless access (FWA) may be smaller than its rivals T-Mobile and Verizon, but now it’s going after the business segment in a big way. AT&T today introduced AT&T Internet Air for Business, a new fixed wireless service for small, mid-size and even large businesses. AT&T Internet Air will support customers via LTE, 5G and 5G+, so it’s covering all its bases, according to Jonathan Biggs, director of Product Management & Development - Fixed Wireless at AT&T Business.

11.? Nokia and Transworld build optical transport network in Pakistan, UAE and Oman

Transworld Associates (TWA) will use Nokia’s optical transport solution to build a new optical network connecting Pakistan, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman as part of its submarine capacity expansion plan. A submarine capacity backhaul system is also being deployed in Karachi Metro. The project will support transformation in the region by accommodating the exponential growth of data and bandwidth links between data centers.

12.? Singtel collaborates with Cisco, Fortinet and Nokia to build quantum-safe solutions for enterprises

Singtel signed three Memoranda of Understanding with industry leaders, Cisco, Fortinet, and Nokia, to provide quantum security solutions to enterprises through its Quantum Safe Network (QSN). With this collaboration, enterprises can tap on Cisco's routing platform, Fortinet's firewalls and Nokia's optical devices to boost their defences against advanced cyber threats. These solutions utilise quantum key distribution, which is a secure method for distributing encryption keys only known between shared parties, from Singtel’s QSN and can be easily integrated into the enterprises’ existing network?and security infrastructure.

Addressing a seminar at the Nordic Investment Bank’s Board of Governors meeting in Tallinn, Estonia, Ekholm said ongoing prioritization of telecoms regulation over innovation - coupled with the fragmented nature of the European communications service provider (CSP) market - ?is inhibiting the region’s ability to embrace new digital technology and economies at the same rate as regions such as China, the U.S. and India.

15.? China’s 5G market is set to add almost $260bn to the Chinese economy in 2030

Ahead of the GSMA’s Post MWC Sharing Event in Beijing, the GSMA has launched the?Mobile Economy China 2024?report. The report forecasts that more than half of Chinese mobile connections will be 5G by the end of 2024. 5G’s contribution to GDP in China is expected to reach almost $260 billion in 2030, which is 23% of the overall annual economic impact of mobile in China. Also by 2030, 5G connections in China will account for nearly a third of the global total, with 5G adoption in China reaching almost 90%, making it one of the leading markets globally.??
