1.???? China Mobile launches the world's first 6G test satellite

China Mobile, the world's largest telecom carrier by mobile subscribers, has successfully launched the world's first satellite to test 6G architecture, marking a milestone in its efforts to explore integrated space and ground communication technology. The low-earth orbit test satellite is the world's first to employ 6G design architecture, and it was launched on Saturday along with another satellite that comes with China Mobile's 5G technology.

2.???? Verizon gives some love to open RAN, marks 130K O-RAN capable radios

Verizon isn’t handing the open RAN keys to a single vendor, as?AT&T did with Ericsson. But it is making sure everyone is aware of Verizon’s commitment to open RAN – to the tune of 130,000 open RAN capable radios. Verizon announced today that it has deployed more than 130,000 O-RAN capable radios, a figure that includes the Massive MIMO radios that are part of the?previously announced?15,000 O-RAN compliant, virtualized cell sites in its commercial Radio Access Network.

3.???? BICS works with AWS to provide low latency mobile roaming

BICS, which provides global roaming services for operators, has begun working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to provide lower-latency roaming. This new cloud-based roaming service is available to mobile operators, and it targets end-user customers that require consistent, low-latency internet both in their home countries and abroad. Some examples of target customers would be companies that provide gaming, streaming media or large data transfers.

India’s third-largest service provider, Vodafone Idea, hopes to finally launch commercial 5G services in another six to seven months, by which time the company believes it will have a “better idea” on how best to monetize its 5G investments.?“We are looking to launch 5G services in about six to seven months,” said?Akshay Moondra, CEO of Vodafone Idea, in the company's recent Q3 FY24 earnings call. “While significant investments have already been made in 5G, there is no monetization happening yet, though it should be around the corner. We expect to have a better idea on 5G monetization by the time we launch.”?

Verizon is putting the VMwares, Aviatrixes and Prosimos on notice. This week the operator launched a play to become the multi-cloud management platform of choice for enterprise customers. At the core of its effort is the aptly named “Cloud Management” solution, which is based on Verizon’s network-as-a-service (NaaS) platform. Like pretty much every other multi-cloud solution out there, Verizon claims its product provides connectivity to all the major cloud providers (AWS, Google, Microsoft, Oracle and IBM) and a platform that allows enterprises to use a common toolset to manage security, policy and more across clouds.

18.? DT picks Mavenir to modernize mobile messaging, part of O-RAN prep

Deutsche Telekom has appointed Mavenir to modernize its mobile messaging infrastructure in four key markets, as part of its broader network upgrade plans centered on Open RAN. This increases Mavenir’s involvement after being chosen as one of three principle initial partners for Open RAN last year, alongside Fujitsu and Nokia. That contract announced in February 2023 set the stage for Mavenir’s recent award, although the former was initially focused on the Neubrandenburg area of Germany, as a setting for introduction of Open RAN in a brownfield site also receiving 2G and 4G services. Those sites were constructing DT’s first commercial Open RAN network with open fronthaul support, splitting radio and baseband functions from Nokia and Fujitsu.
