1.????Mavenir Launches Open RAN Intelligent Controller (O-RIC)

Mavenir announced the availability of its O-RAN alliance Radio Access Network Intelligent Controller (RIC), a next-generation network intelligence offering for Open RAN.?Mavenir O-RIC enables the creation of differentiated services through open APIs, which enable intelligent closed-loop end-to-end network tuning to optimize network performance, increase cost efficiency and maximize the user experience. Mavenir’s O-RIC offers Network Intelligence as a Service (NIaaS) that provides deep, fine-grained insights about the network and enables building solutions with advanced state of art intelligence. Open RAN networks can also now generate new class-of-service revenue streams by adaptively reacting in near-real time to dynamic changes in network, traffic, and load patterns. Mavenir’s O-RIC is currently in deployment with two, tier one Communications Service Providers (CSPs).

3.????AST SpaceMobile strikes deals in Saudi Arabia and Brazil

AST SpaceMobile, a satellite operator which is based in the U.S., has entered two new partnerships: One with Kuwaiti operator Zain, and another with Brazil’s TIM. In the deal with Zain, AST SpaceMobile will help improve digital services in Saudi Arabia. In a signed Memorandum of Understanding, the partners outlined plans for AST SpaceMobile to provide the operator with its satellite-based broadband network to better provide coverage in rural, remote and other hard-to-reach sites. The agreement, said the companies, also includes the exploration of potential space-based mobile broadband services.

A new report from Lumen Technologies showed more distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are targeting telecom companies than ever before. But Mark Dehus, director of threat intelligence for Lumen’s Black Lotus Labs, told Fierce it’s not just the traffic coming in that operators need to worry about but also the outbound streams as well.

5.????Japan picks Rakuten, NTT Docomo to work with U.K. on open RAN

Two Japanese operators — NTT Docomo and Rakuten Mobile — will share their information on radio access network (open RAN) technology with British organizations, according to multiple news outlets, including the?Japan Times. In March 2022, the Japanese and British governments?agreed to cooperate?on open RAN, among other joint telecommunications research.

6.????FCC greenlights Project Kuiper after setting orbital debris requirements

The?FCC’S grant?comes after it approved Kuiper’s updated orbital debris mitigation plan. The?agency in 2020?had granted Amazon's Project Kuiper permission to deploy 3,236 satellites aimed at closing the digital divide.?But the project has been delayed due to concerns about its orbital debris. This week the FCC said it is requiring Kuiper to comply with a series of orbital debris conditions.

7.????Euro telcos take on Google and Meta with digital marketing platform venture

The European Commission has approved the creation of a digital advertising platform joint venture (JV) by Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone Group that, the giant telcos claim, will “benefit consumers, advertisers and publishers alike”. It also puts the JV in direct competition with the so-called “big tech” companies such as Google and Meta.??

8.????NEC successfully demonstrated Multi-Vendor Near-RT RIC Integration in O-RAN Global PlugFest 2022

NEC Corporation successfully demonstrated multi-vendor integration and interoperability of a Near-Real-Time RAN Intelligent Controller (Near-RT RIC) at the?O-RAN ALLIANCE?Global PlugFest Fall 2022 in Japan. NEC, VIAVI Solutions and HCL Technologies (HCLTech) teamed up for this project to demonstrate the multi-vendor Near-Real-Time RIC performance benchmarking. NEC's Near-RT RIC platform enabled third party xApp integrations while connecting with multi-vendor E2 nodes.

12.?BSNL asks Tejas to supply 4G devices for 1 lakh sites

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Board recommended Tejas Network to deploy 1 lakh network sites to launch 4G services in the country.?The telco will send its recommendation (purchase order) to the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) for approval, and then in return DoT will send it to the Group of Ministers?(GoM) to seek clearance.

13.?Frontier lends its fiber to fuel AT&T 5G growth

Frontier Communications and AT&T once again joined forces, this time inking an agreement which will allow the latter to hook its wireless assets up to the former’s fiber facilities. The deal builds on an earlier fiber partnership the pair struck in October 2021.

14.?Mavenir deal with Cohere seeks to ‘turbocharge’ 4G, 5G

Mavenir CEO Pardeep Kohli said his company is working with Cohere Technologies to “turbocharge” the already installed base of radios and help operators get more out of the costs they’ve sunk into all of their spectrum and networks. “Going forward, growth will slow down a lot as most people are already using wireless service. CTOs and CFOs of operators will have to consider how to ‘get more’ out of their investment. Innovation will be an answer to the problem and it cannot just come from 2-3 established incumbents. Mavenir wants to open up the ecosystem to provide more innovative companies to bring their products to market,” Kohli?wrote on LinkedIn, adding: “This will help all of us.”

15.?Qualcomm prepares for 5G-Advanced with X75 chip

Qualcomm is readying for the next phase of 5G with its 5G-advanced ready chipset, the Snapdragon X75. The chip is based on the 3GPP Release 17 standard but will work with 3GPP Release 18, which is considered 5G-advanced and is scheduled to be finished in mid-2023.

16.?BT boasts rural backhaul breakthrough

As part of ongoing efforts to broaden and improve its mobile broadband connectivity outside urban areas across the whole of the UK, BT has been investing not only in its radio access network (RAN) capabilities but also beefing up the all-important backhaul network links that connect its cell sites to its metro, regional and backbone data networks. And now it is ready to make commercial use of its relationship with low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite network operator OneWeb to improve the backhaul links to remote rural mobile sites that cannot be reached with fibre or microwave backhaul links.?
