Teldat's Enlit 2023 Recap: Leading the Charge in Smart Energy Solutions
Discover the Latest in Innovation and Technology with Teldat at Enlit 2023! Did you miss out on this year's most groundbreaking event in the energy and technology sphere?
?Worry not, Teldat brings you an exclusive roundup of the most significant advancements and emerging trends shaping the future of smart grids, renewable energy storage, and much more.
From the hydrogen revolution to the digitalization of energy, we take you behind the scenes of Enlit 2023!
Among the standout observations, our team noted a significant uptick in the utilization of Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) to enhance communications while reducing infrastructure costs. Another notable trend is the increasing emphasis on endpoint cybersecurity, highlighting its growing importance in our industry.
Yet, Enlit Europe 2023 was a melting pot of numerous other groundbreaking developments, extending far beyond the aforementioned trends. Let's delve briefly into a few of these key areas that captured our attention
The crunch behind renewables
The crunch behind renewables, is definitely storage. If you don’t have some sort of storage, then the deployment of renewables has an element of risk behind them. No storage, means that all the power produced, needs to virtually be consumed at that point in time.
However, with climate changes and climate irregularities becoming more frequent, it is clear that long duration energy storage must be of high importance for countries with ambitious renewable energy targets. ?
The European Union for example has the objective of establishing 42.5% of its energy consumption from renewable sources by 2030. Without long duration energy storage, it is difficult to see how this would be possible. ?
The key to all this is being able to generate “green” energy storage to accompany renewable energy production.
Otherwise, in the end, renewable energy might not be so “green”. ?Currently there are various methods for storage. There are the mechanical energy storage methods such as hydro-pumped storage. Then there are the electrochemical energy storage methods and various others.
The important point is in finding the best methods that adapt to the different circumstances within each area. That’s why many engineers that work within long duration energy storage believe, that there still needs to be an important amount of innovation to create better and greener storage methods. ??
Hydrogen energy
With the decarbonization targets that we have in place, the use of hydrogen energy is seen as totally viable. There are companies that have been working on the concept of hydrogen energy for many years now, seeing that after 2025, perhaps this energy source can gradually start to be deployed.
However, one point is key. Most experts agree that as the production of hydrogen energy requires vast amounts of renewable energy. So that the production of hydrogen energy or hydrogen fuels can be produced. That’s because carrying out electrolysis ( by using electricity) to split water into hydrogen and oxygen, requires a considerable amount of electricity. And this is only viable if the energy being used comes from a renewable source.
Indeed, within the EU, green hydrogen production is definitely being pushed and it is seen as a priority, in order to achieve decarbonization for clean energy. ?
Even Smarter Grids
We have been talking about Smart Grids now for many years and we have seen important changes in the grid networks throughout many countries. However, there are two points related to this concept.
On the one side, we still have countries that have out-dated grids, which need to turn to smart grid infrastructure. This will require important investments and the application of smart grid technology that we already have with us today.
Yet there is a second issue related to smart grid technology. It needs to carry on innovating, so that the smart grids become more energy efficient and sustainable, to coincide with the introduction of more and more new energy productions.
?Digitalization
What we have mentioned above, are just a few areas which have been covered last week at Enlit Europe 2023. However, whether it’s these or other energy areas, it is comprehensible that all have an increase use of communications and Operational Technology / Information Technology which has to be safeguarded by the use of Cybersecurity.
As the systems become more complex, they require more communications and to avoid cyber attacks, an efficient and effective cybersecurity system needs to be put in place.
?Conclusion
For Teldat, ENLIT Europe 2023 was a most fruitful experience. We had the chance to meet clients, with who it’s always a pleasure to get together with, whether at an event or otherwise.
Moreover, a considerable number of people who we had not had the chance to meet before, came by and asked for information on all the Use Cases that we had drawn out on the stand, as well as asking about the Teldat products and solutions in general.
